Tata Altroz Spotted On Test, Could Be Upcoming Turbo Petrol Variant With DCT

Tata Motors launched the Altroz earlier this year to take on the likes of Maruti Baleno and Hyundai Elite i20. However, a test mule of the car draped in heavy camo was recently spotted in Coimbatore, which happens to be the home of Jayem Automotive. Before you jump on to any conclusion, we tell you that Tata-Jayem JV that made Tiago and Tigor JTP versions has already been laid to rest. Therefore, we are sure that the spied model isn’t the JTP version of the Altroz, but it is likely to be the turbo-petrol variant. The reason to believe the rumours are many. First and foremost is that Jayem Automotive develops the turbochargers and other internals for Tata cars. The same could be the case with the Altroz you see here.

Tata Motors launched the Altroz with the same 1.2L Revotron 3-pot naturally aspirated petrol motor as the Tiago and Tigor. Although, the motor came with an additional balancer shaft here. But it pushed out identical power and torque output of 86 PS and 113 Nm as the Tiago. Since the motor feels out of life in the Altroz, a turbo-petrol motor is the need of the hour.

Also, Tata Motors launched the Altroz with a 5-speed MT only. However, at the time of launch, the manufacturer confirmed that the Altroz will get a premium automatic transmission option at a later stage. This was a clear hint towards the 7-speed DCT. Also, we earlier reported that automatic variants of the Altroz will get an electronic parking brake as well.

Talking of the new turbo-petrol motor, it is expected to be a polished version of the Nexon’s force-fed unit. The 3-pot turbocharged motor of the Nexon is designed to generate a peak power output of 120 PS and max torque of 170 Nm. On the Altroz, however, this motor is likely to get a new improved VGT to offer increased low-end grunt. The turbo variants of the Altroz are expected to be launched by festive season this year if all goes well. However, once launched, it will compete with the Maruti Baleno, upcoming new-gen Hyundai Elite i20 and the likes.
