Tata Harrier will debut a new 1.5-litre turbo-petro engine in the second half of this year, followed by the Tata Gravitas with same unit.

That the Tata Harrier Petrol is being developed is something that has been said and discussed a gazillion times by now. However, according to a fresh report, the Tata Harrier will receive the company's all-new 1.5-litre petrol engine in the second-half of this year. Soon thereafter, even the Gravitas will receive the same petrol-sipping heart.

The new petrol engine in the Harrier and Gravitas will be a 1.5-litre direct-injection four-cylinder turbocharged motor which is basically a bigger version of Nexon’s 1.2-litre Revotron turbocharged petrol unit. This mill will be tuned to make over 150hp of maximum power.

“We’ve always had the four-cylinder version of the this engine in mind. And with 65-70 percent of Nexon sales now going to a petrol, this is the next step”, said Rajendra Petkar, Chief Technology Officer of Tata Motors.

The upcoming Tata Harrier petrol will come with selectable drive modes. The standard transmission option will be a 6-speed manual gearbox but an automatic option will on both the Harrier and its 7-seater sibling. The petrol-AT version of the SUVs will be available with paddle shifters and even a Sport mode.

The introduction of Tata Harrier petrol is expected to improve the SUV's sales, given the fact that more than half of the MG Hector’s sales come from the petrol models. This indicates the C-SUV buyers’ sentiments are biased toward the petrol configurations since they command a cheaper maintenance and ownership cost. Other than the MG Hector, the Harrier even rivals the Jeep Compass, which, too, comes with a petrol engine option in the form of a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol motor good for 163HP of power. In fact, even the next-gen Mahindra XUV500 will be equipped with a 190HP 2.0-litre mStallion gasoline unit.

Tata is considering multiple variants of the 1.5-litre petrol engine for the future development. In case of a requirement of even more performance, the company can bring in a variable geometry turbocharger that helps the motor churn out more than 160HP of maximum power. A mild-hybrid variant might be put in the pipeline as well when the CAFE norms roll out in 2022.
