Tata Harrier will get a diesel engine with automatic gearbox. Here are pictures of this version spied being on the test drive.

Approaching the due date, there are more and more sneak peeks of this car spreading over the internet. Official teasers are released back to back, from the platform revealed to the endurance test scene. And just recently, spied shots of the diesel automatic Harrier have been revealed.

Tata Motor has recently confirmed that Tata Harrier – the latest SUV from the brand – is going to offer a 2-litre diesel engine. What’s more, the spied shot has confirmed that it will come with an automatic gearbox as well. It is still unknown what kind of automatic transmission gearbox the Harrier will get.

Apparently, before the Harrier, the Hexa is the only cars from Tata that is given an automatic transmission. The Hexa uses a 6-speed torque converter sourced from the Punch Powerglide Strasbourg (PPS). It is expected that the Harrier will also feature a torque converter but not the one has appeared on the Hexa. Another possibility is that the Harrier will get a six-speed torque converter from Hyundai for the automatic version.

The new diesel engine which is named Kryotec is anticipated to be revised from Jeep Compass’s Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre MultiJet engine. This is a four-cylinder turbocharged unit. It is not a surprise as Tata has borrowed Fiat’s 1.3-litre MultiJet engine for the Zest and Bold. Moreover, the 2.0-litre MultiJet engine has been locally produced at Fiat-Tata’s plant at Rajangaon, also where the Harrier is built. So, you could expect the Harrier to get a similar engine under a different name. The engine output might be around 140PS. For the larger seven-seater figuration, this engine could be tuned for higher output, around 170PS.

From the spied pictures, we could also spot some features inside the cabin, for example, the engine start/stop push-button, control-mounted steering, and the 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

Even though Tata has confirmed the upcoming diesel-powered Harrier, it is still left unanswered whether or not Tata Harrier will offer petrol engine.

Booking for Tata Harrier has been opened at the price of Rs 30,000. The price of the Tata Harrier is expected to range from 16 lakh and could go up to 21 lakh. At this price range, Tata Harrier will fare against the Nissan Kicks and Mahindra XUV500. Hyundai Creta and Renault Captur are also the rivals of this SUV. Tata Harrier will be launched in January 2019.
