Tata Harrier Records WHOPPING 167% Sales Growth, Overtakes MG Hector

In August, the Tata Harrier witnessed a 167% increase in YoY sales number, exceeding the MG Hector to become the top-selling SUV in the segment in the Indian auto market.

The Tata Harrier, Jeep Compass, MG Hector and Mahindra XUV500 are competing against each other in the premium SUV segment in the Indian auto market. All of them fall into the price range of INR 13 lakh to INR 25 lakh with the Jeep Compass being the most expensive. Last month, the Tata Harrier defeated the MG Hector to become the best-selling SUV in its segment.

In August 2020, 1,694 units of the Tata Harrier were sold in comparison with 635 units sold in the same period last year, recording an increase of 167% in sales number, which is the highest in the segment. In the meanwhile, MG Motor sold only 1,366 units of the MG Hector and Hector Plus combined last month. The MG Hector witnessed a 32% decline in sales number compared with its 2018 units sold last year.

The addition of an automatic gearbox to the transmission options of the Tata Harrier turned out to be effective in increasing its popularity with the Indian auto customers. The automatic version of the Tata Harrier was launched at the beginning of this year; nevertheless, most of the cars got delivered after the ease of the lockdown. The Hector Plus was launched only two months ago with the addition of the sixth seat or a third row. All of the seat rows come with two captain seats to offer the best comfort level to the occupants. While the waiting period of the MG Hector is under a month, that of the MG Hector Plus is still high.

The newest version of the Tata Harrier comes with a new red paint scheme with a contrasting black roof, a panoramic sunroof, dual-tone alloy rims, auto-dimming IRVMs, powered driver seat, etc. The safety features include dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and electronic stability program, which are provided as standard features across all the variants. The SUV receives its power from a 2.0-litre oil burner which can generate 170 PS against 350 Nm and is mated to a 6-speed MT/6-speed torque converter.

2020 tata harrier automatic front three quarters

Launched earlier this year, the automatic Tata Harrier contributed a major part to the decent sales number of the SUV.

The MG Hector is also equipped with a wide range of top-notch features which include a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, rain-sensing wipers and a 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and rear parking sensors. The SUV is powered by both gasoline and oil burners. The transmission options include a 6-speed MT and DCT. While the Tata Harrier is priced in the range from INR 13.84 lakh to INR 20.3 lakh, the MG Hector costs between INR 12.73 lakh and INR 13.72 lakh (all prices are ex-showroom).
