Last month, Tata Motors has registered the biggest-ever drop in sales on YoY basis, with the figures clocking a massive 84% drop on YoY basis

Tata Motors has been constantly working on expanding its product portfolio to score bigger figures on the sales chart. The carmaker has introduced two new products in the country this year – Altroz and Nexon EV. The manufacturer has also updated the Tiago, Tigor, Nexon, and Harrier with minor styling updates, BS-6 engines and some extra features. All of it was done in a bid to increase its share in the Indian market. The sales numbers, however, speak for something else. The manufacturer has registered a massive drop of 84 per cent in the month of March on a YoY basis.

The manufacturer sold a total of 11,012 units in March this year in comparison to 68,727 units sold last year in the same month. In general, the lowest sales figures of the calander year are often recorded in March, since it marks the end of the financial year in the country. However, this year, the unfavourable circumstances that have gripped the entire country can also be considered as one of the primary reason for the huge drop in the sales curve of the manufacturer. If the total sales figures and the drop have to be bifurcated in between the company’s passenger and commercial vehicle division, the former registered a drop of 68 per cent, while the latter recorded a drop of 87 per cent.

"Vehicle sales were affected by the COVID-19 outbreak and the subsequent nationwide lockdown. However, the customer response to our newly launched models - the Altroz and the refreshed BS-VI range is encouraging,"

Mayank Pareek, President, Passenger Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors Ltd.
