Tata’s new Maruti Ertiga rival will be based on the Tata Altroz. The launch is expected to take place after the introduction of much-anticipated production-spec Tata HBX micro SUV.

While the MPV segment of India has started getting much attention from car buyers, it comes as no surprise that many more carmakers decided to jump on this bandwagon that’s not too crowded now. In April this year, we informed you that Tata was considering a new Altroz-based MPV that rivals the Maruti Ertiga. According to a recent report, the home-grown automaker will start developing the MPV after the launch of the Tata HBX concept-based micro-SUV. The latter is slated to be introduced in India by this financial year’s end, probably in January – March period of 2021.

That said, the upcoming Tata MPV will directly compete with the Maruti Ertiga and Mahindra Marazzo in the segment. It is expected to sit on the ALFA platform which also spawns off the Tata Altroz and upcoming Tata HBX. This modular platform can be used on many different body types and powertrain options like petrol, diesel, and electric. It is likely that the upcoming Tata MPV will be offered with two flexible seating configurations.

On the mechanical front, the forthcoming Maruti Ertiga rivalling MPV could be powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel mill that’s also seen under the Nexon’s bonnet. This engine is capable of generating 108 BHP of max power and 260 Nm of peak torque. Possibly, there would be another petrol engine option on offer, but the details remain unknown. We do expect the MPV to carry over the 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol mill or a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol motor that is under development for the Tata Harrier. Tata’s new Maruti Ertiga rival is anticipated to be launched in 2022 while testing of the same might commence after the festive season.
