Volvo India is gearing up for the launch of a brand-new 3-seater version of the XC90 luxurious SUV. Once launched in India, this Volvo XC90 Excellence will be the first ever 3-seater SUV in the country.

The exterior of the 3-seater SUV bears a strong resemblance to the regular XC90 Excellence. However, it is the cabin that sets the two cars apart from each other. As its name suggests, the three-seater version is not equipped with the front passenger seat and comes with only a single driver’s seat in the front and two seats in the rear. To compensate for the absence of the front passenger seat, more comfort has been brought to both the driver and the rear passengers.

The front passenger seat gives way to a box, outside of which there are cabinets for the passengers to store small items. The box also offers footrest for the rear passengers. Moreover, the passenger behind the driver is offered a foldable workstation. A mini refrigerator is located behind the armrest in the rear and there ambient lighting in the cabin. The front screen can be electrically powered; the electrically adjustable and movable final seat row is equipped with heating functions. There is also a glass partition which separates the passenger and the luggage area from each other.

The 3-seater Volvo XC90 Excellence will borrow the hybrid engine from the 4-seater one. While the 2.0L supercharged 4 cylinder petrol motor is good for 125 bhp of maximum power and 400 Nm of peak torque, the electric hybrid unit can deliver 86 bhp against 240 Nm. These two engines can produce a combined output of 401 bhp against 640 Nm. The power will be sent to the four wheels through an 8-speed AT gearbox.

As regards Volvo India, the best sales performance has been recorded for the Swedish automaker with a 30% growth in 2018, in which the increased sales of the models underpinned by CMA and SPA platforms such as the XC40, XC60, XC90 and the S90 were the most noteworthy. The XC60, XC90 and S90 are locally assembled in India, but the XC40 is on sale as a CBU.
