Toyota-Badged Baleno To Launch This Year At A Competitive Price

Toyota Baleno, the first result of the cooperation between Toyota and Maruti Suzuki is expected to receive some design tweaks while maintaining the mechanical specifications as its donor.

The partnership between Toyota and Maruti Suzuki is a win-win situation for the two companies. While the Japanese automaker receives the popular products that are lacked in its portfolio in India, the Indian largest carmaker receives Japanese cutting-edge technologies. Now, it has been confirmed by Toyota that the first outcome of the alliance will be the launch of the Toyota Baleno in the latter half of this year. In return, Toyota will provide Maruti Suzuki with the Corolla, which will become one of the most important D-segment sedans of the latter.

Toyota is likely to produce its version of the Baleno with some tweaks to both the exterior and interior. These changes will be kept to a minimum to reduce the cost as much as possible. The 1.2L K series petrol and 1.3L DDiS Fiat-sourced diesel motors as well as the transmission options will be carried over from the Maruti Baleno to its Toyota-badged version with the latter expected to receive some updates to conform to the BS-VI standards. A hybrid variant is also likely to be introduced as a result of the alliance between the two companies for EVs development.

Maruti Suzuki is reported to supply its partner with 20k to 25k units of the Baleno hatchback each year. The official launch of the vehicle will take place in the second half of this year. Thanks to the high level of localisation, the Toyota Baleno will have a competitive price.

Rivalling the Volkswagen Polo, Honda Jazz and Hyundai Elite i20, Maruti Suzuki Baleno is one of the top-selling hatchbacks in India. The Toyota-badged Baleno is anticipated to help the Japanese carmaker increase its penetration into the Indian teeming hatchback segment, which the Etios and Liva have failed to do.
