Toyota will rebadge the Ertiga MPV. The price of the new model is expected to be competitive.

Toyota's primary source of income derives from the premium SUV segment. Two main products on Toyota’s range include the Innova Crysta and Fortuner. Both of them gain colossal success and top as the best-selling models in their classes. However, the Japanese carmaker could not replicate the same success on the affordable under-10 lakh segment. After some failed attempts in the affordably-priced car segment, Toyota will come back with several new under-10-lakh cars that would be developed in cooperation with none other than the market-leading Maruti Suzuki. Maruti’s expertise and success in the India segment might help Toyota to expand their share in the market of affordable vehicles. In return, Toyota will provide their experience and knowledge in developing a hybrid system.

According to Toyota’s plan, Maruti models including the Ertiga, Ciaz and Vitara Brezza will be tuned and rebadged as Toyota’s models. The first vehicle to be launched under this scheme is the Toyota Glanza. This Baleno-rebadged premium hatchback is recently launched at the starting price of 7.22 lakh. On the other hand, Maruti will borrow the RAV4 and Corolla Wagon EVs from Toyota to introduce at the European market.

Toyota-rebadged Ertiga will be priced competitively

At the moment, Toyota is offering its premium SUV Innova Crysta at a higher price than its older version. In the future, Toyota is planning to introduce two more MPVs that position below the Innova Crysta. One of the two new models would be the rebadged version of Maruti Ertiga. It is expected that the Toyota-rebadged Ertiga would deliver some distinctive elements that set it apart from the original model.

Toyota MPV is likely to receive power from the 1.5-litre SHVS petrol engine which delivers 104 PS and 138 Nm. This engine will be mated with either a four-speed torque converter automatic transmission or a five-speed manual unit. The rebadged Ertiga is speculated to be priced competitively. Possibly, it would be even cheaper than the Ertiga. The expected price range is from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 15 lakh. To keep the price in check, Toyota must highly localize the rebadged Ertiga.
