Currently, Toyota Kirloskar Motor has only two SUVs in its lineup - Fortuner and Urban Cruiser. However, this could change with the launch of the C-HR

In September this year, Toyota launched the Urban Cruiser, which is nothing but a rebadged Maruti Vitara Brezza with minor cosmetic updates. With this, it has increased the number of Toyota SUVs in India to two. With the growing popularity of the SUVs and crossovers, it is likely that Toyota will not stop at two SUV models. It is reported that the Japanese car manufacturer is working on a new SUV which will fill the gap between the Toyota Fortuner and the newly-launched Toyota Urban Cruiser. Called Toyota C-HR, the new SUV has been spotted on India roads for several occasions.

Before the pandemic, it was expected that the SUV would hit the market around 2021. Apparently, the recent health crisis has frozen the development activities of the new SUV. However, new spy images of the Toyota C-HR suggest that Toyota has resumed the launch plan for the new SUV.

The Toyota C-HR was spotted with full camouflage but there were still some visible styling elements. For example, the Toyota C-HR was seen with sharp headlights and dual-tone alloy wheels. The rear end features sleek taillights which look similar the ones on Honda Civic. As for the overall silhouette, the new SUV features a coupe-ish sloping rear roof with a roof-mounted rear spoiler. Even though the car was carefully covered, we can still tell that it will be an absolute looker.

Toyota C-HR is underpinned by the TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform. On the global market, Toyota C-HR is powered by a 2.0-litre, naturally aspirated 4-cylinder petrol engine. Mated to an eCVT, this engine is good for 144 Bhp of peak power and 188 Nm of maximum torque. However, when it enters the India market, it is likely that Toyota will replace the global-spec 2.0-litre engine with a smaller engine. Hybrid setting or plug-in hybrid system are expected to be offered in the India-spec model.

In terms of features, Toyota C-HR is expected to come with up-market goodies like 8-inch touchscreen infotainment and connectivity techs. Other features that might be included on the C-HR are lane departure alert, collision avoidance system, road sign assist, adaptive cruise control, and more.

It is expected that Toyota will bring the Toyota C-HR to our market via the CBU route, which also means that the new SUV will not come with an affordable price tag. Toyota C-HR is likely to cost around Rs 20-25 lakh. It will rival the likes of Jeep Compass, Volkswagen T-Roc, and Skoda Karoq.
