Toyota Fortuner To Get Costlier In The Coming Time

Toyota updated the Fortuner’s powertrain to attain compliance with the BS-6 emission norms back in January this year. The carmaker managed to introduce the updates without increasing the price of the SUV. Before launching the BS-6 Fortuner, the carmaker had hiked the SUV’s prices by Rs. 35,000, and thus the carmaker refrained itself from increasing the prices furthermore. Though, Toyota then announced that these are celebratory prices and they would be hiking the prices soon.

Toyota might increase the prices of diesel variants of the Fortuner.

According to the carmaker, updating an existing BS-4 engine to withstand BS-6 emission norms requires a lot of capital investments. But seeking the cost of the update from the market in the initial stage would have turned table against the carmaker. Thus, Toyota planned to hike the prices at a later stage.

Now, the BS-6 emission norms have finally kicked in and the BS-6 Fortuner is in the market for almost 3 months, Toyota will be increasing the prices of the diesel variants of the car. The 2.7L petrol engine is anyways a cheaper unit to produce and therefore it is expected to be on sale with no change to the prices of petrol variants of the car. The petrol motor on the Fortuner belts out 166 PS/245 Nm and can be had mated to either a 5-speed MT or a 6-speed AT. The 2.8L oil burner is the more powerful unit here. It whips out 177 PS as its peak power output, while it produces a max. torque of 420 Nm when coupled to a 6-speed manual gearbox. With the optional 6-speed AT, max. torque is calculated at 450 Nm. Also, the 4X4 option is restricted to a diesel engine only.

The current generation of the Fortuner was launched in India in the year 2016. It is almost 4 years old now and is due for a facelift. However, the car does not feel old yet from any angle. Prototypes of the Fortuner facelift have been snapped under heavy camouflage and are expected to hit the showroom floors by the first half of 2021. The Fortuner facelift is expected to borrow some design cues from the larger Land Cruiser Prado. But, we believe the facelift would be a great opportunity for Toyota to introduce a better set of down-sized engine options with a slick AT, like the Endeavour.
