Tata Motors'design head - Pratap Bose confirms that brand is not planning a Toyota Innova Crysta rival anytime soon. Read the complete report here.

Toyota Innova is one of the most-reputed MPVs in the Indian market. To date, Toyota has sold over 2.50 lakh examples of the Innova Crysta in the country. Almost every carmaker has tried to grab a share of its market, but every effort has been in vain. Mahindra tried with the Marazzo, Maruti with the Ertiga, and Kia did so with a posher and bigger MPV – Carnival. Sadly, no returns were achieved. A concerned Tata patron recently asked the Tata design maestro – Pratap Bose, if the indigenous carmaker is planning to launch an Innova rival in the Indian market.

The Tata patron said, “No company has an answer to Toyota Innova. Please make an identical vehicle which is spacious like it. That segment is unrivalled yet. Please, at least now something has to happen in that segment. I hope TATA with Fiat engines can do it. Toyota Innova space is important.” To which Bose replied, “Why would anyone make something identical to something else?? We are guided by our own understanding of segments, and will focus on satisfying customer need to design the best products for them.”

With Bose’s words, it is clear that Tata Motors is not planning to launch a Toyota Innova Crysta rivalling MPV anytime soon in the market. However, Tata Motors is planning to launch the 6-seater and 7-seater versions of the Harrier, which will be christened as Gravitas. It was showcased at the Auto Expo, earlier this year, and received a great response from the audience. While the Tata Gravitas will rival the likes of MG Hector Plus and Mahindra XUV500, MG considers the Innova Crysta as a potent rival to the Hector Plus.

Talking of the Innova Crysta, Toyota has recently introduced the facelifted iteration of the MPV in the Indian market. With the update, it now boasts of certain cosmetic updates on the outside, a new colour for the upholstery and a bigger 9-inch infotainment unit on the inside. However, it continues to retain the old powertrain and drivetrain options. It can be had with either a 2.7L petrol unit or a 2.4 oil burner. Both of these engine options are offered with two gearbox choices – 5-speed MT and 6-speed AT.
