Toyota has teased the upcoming Urban Cruiser. Once launched, it’ll compete with the likes of Maruti Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon and Ford EcoSport.

Toyota has recently released the first teaser image of its upcoming sub-compact SUV in India, the Urban Cruiser. The teaser image comes just some time after the company revealed the new nameplate. The all-new Toyota SUV is likely to hit the Indian shores in the coming weeks. The upcoming Urban Cruiser will be the company’s second vehicle under the new Toyota-Suzuki joint venture in India. Basically, the Urban Cruiser will be the re-badged version of the Maruti Vitara Brezza. Toyota Glanza, which is based on Maruti Baleno, was the first car from this partnership. The new teaser image partially reveals the front grille of the vehicle.

With this car, the Japanese automaker will enter into the highly competitive sub-4-meter SUV segment and will rival the likes of Hyundai Venue, Maruti Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport, Mahindra XUV300 and upcoming Kia Sonet. The new teaser image shows that the SUV will employ Toyota Fortuner-inspired dual-chrome slat grille along with Toyota badging in the middle.

One might expect the upcoming Toyota Urban Cruiser to receive some styling tweaks in the form of a new bumper, redesigned headlamps, new set of alloy wheels and distinctive colour shade. However, going by how the Glanza stays almosst identical to the Baleno, we do not think the company will fiddle too much with the Brezza's styling package. The all-new Toyota Urban Cruiser will derive power from a 1.5-litre K15B gasoline mill with SHVS mild-hybrid technology. The engine is capable of developing 103bhp of peak power and 138 Nm of twisting force. The same powertrain does duties in Maruti Vitara Brezza, Ciaz, Ertiga and XL6.

Transmission duties will be done by a 5-speed MT or a 4-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The cabin of the SUV will remain the same except for the addition of a brighter colour scheme and new upholstery. Moreover, the Toyota Urban Cruiser will come loaded with features like a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, automatic AC, projector headlamps with LED DRLs and much more. One can expect the automaker in introduce the SUV in top-spec trims only.
