Two used vehicles have been swapped for two new Renault Duster SUVs to be stolen away by two employees at the Chennai factory.

The thieves were the technicians of Renault Nissan, M Arun Kumar, 27 and P Marimuthu alias Mohmad Asharaf, 28. They have been trying to steal two new Duster SUVs from the facility in Oragadam. Both of them have been employees in Renault Nissan for 7 years. One of the stolen SUV has been even sold at Rs 6 lakhs while the other was on the verge of being sold, too because they have been looking for the second buyer.

Their plot was very simple. Gate passes were counterfeited, forged number plates were utilized and two used cars were brought into the facility. As usual, the security guards would write down the registration number of cars getting in and out of the factory, but not their model, brand or state. After that, the thieves exchanged the number plates of the old cars for that of the new ones and stole them away from the factory.

Not until January 22, 2018 did the company realize that the two new SUVs were lost from the company plant. The police have arrested the two technicians and reclaimed the two vehicles.

This incident has raised awareness of car makers in India of the security in their plants so that they will take appropriate security measures to avoid similar incidents.
