It has been expected that a new below-Polo car will be developed on the MQB A0 platform. But Volkswagen has eliminated this rumour, saying no car sitting under the Polo in the near future.

Volkswagen has cleared out the possibility of launching a car sitting under the recent Polo. To put it in a context, Volkswagen confirms that its new MQB A0 platform is going under work to underpin several models from different segments. None of that includes a smaller car that undercuts the Volkswagen Polo hatchback. The first model to be developed on this platform is the T-Cross SUV. Thanks to its flexibility, the MQB A0 platform could work well even for the cars of different body type.

Volkswagen Group’s leader Gurpratap Boparai said

“Lower (product, in terms of segments) than what we currently make would not make sense for us. We are currently working on 2 body styles for each brand.”

Right now, Volkswagen Polo is their entry-level car in the India market. However, in other markets, Volkswagen still has another hatchback that positions below the Polo. It seems to indicate that there is hope for another car that could sneak under the Polo for the Indian market. However, with the recent announcement from the Volkswagen, we could not hope for another affordable model from the German automobile manufacturer.

Volkswagen also revealed that at best, MQB A0-IN could be used on a near-D-segment. “The biggest product would come very close to a D segment car. It can’t go up to the Octavia,” Boparai added.

So, now we could know for sure that a new SUV below Skoda Octavia and a new-gen Polo will be introduced. Besides, it is also expected that Volkswagen will launch a new model every six months, and the first of the line will come around March 2021. As a part of their localization attempt, Volkswagen will establish a new centre in Pune for engineering and design and expand production capacity at their plants. And they also aim at localizing the MQB A0 platform up to 90 per cent.
