Volkswagen’s new sub-4m SUV will take a fight against Maruti Vitara Brezza, Mahindra XUV300, Tata Nexon, Ford Ecosport and Hyundai Venue.

The country’s sub-four-metre SUV space is full of excitements right now. While Kia Motors has been working on its upcoming sub-4-metre SUV based on the Kia Sonet concept shown at the Auto Expo 2020, Volkswagen India is also working on its own subcompact SUV to join the competition.

VW Tiguan AllSpace (7-seater) Launched in India | Detailed Walkaround (Hindi)

With the German auto brand confirming to be converted to an SUV maker in India, Volkswagen has already launched the Tiguan AllSpace in our market. The 7-seater SUV will be followed by the T-Roc on March 16 and the Taigun for 2021 later this year. The fourth model in VW India’s SUV lineup will be the Maruti Vitara Brezza-rivalling sub-four-metre sport utility vehicle. While the information on VW’s new subcompact SUV is still scarce, what we do know is that it will be underpinned by the company’s MQB A0-IN platform which also underpins the Skoda Vision IN-based SUV.

As far as the design goes, the upcoming SUV will stay in line with the latest-gen VW cars and carry some similarity with the Taigun and T-Roc siblings. We also expect that the interior will be a notch above its rivals with the introduction of a larger touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument cluster and many comfort goodies.

In all likelihood, the VW subcompact SUV will be powered by the same BSVI-compliant 1.0-litre TSI three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine as seen in the 2020 VW Polo. The engine is capable of generating 110 HP of max power and 175 Nm of torque and comes coupled with either a 6-speed MT or a 6-speed torque converter option. There’s no information on a diesel powertrain for the upcoming model.

The upcoming VW subcompact SUV is expected to be launched after the VW Taigun so it’s anticipated to be launched here by the end of 2021. That said, Volkswagen will have to price the SUV its own product aggressively to steal the limelight from the segment-leaders like Maruti Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300, etc. or the imminent Kia Sonet.
