VW Nivus Partially Unveiled, Based on India-bound Taigun SUV

VW has partially unveiled its upcoming Nivus coupe-SUV along with some of its gritty details. The upcoming SUV will be based on the India-bound Taigun SUV and is aimed at filling a void in VW's extensive lineup. Initially, the automaker will introduce the all-new SUV in South America, before launching it in several other foreign markets. These partially camouflaged images of the all-new SUV give us a hint of the upcoming model’s styling. The new SUV looks to be inspired by the company’s latest SUV design language, particularly close to the India-bound Taigun that was unveiled at this year's Auto Expo. The all-new SUV definitely features a distinctive design language and has been christened as Nivus.

Nivus will be the first VW car to employ an 8-inch infotainment unit

The SUV will employ a coupe-like roofline, which enhances the sporty quotient of the car and even hints at its potential. The upcoming SUV will be based on the MQB AO platform, which not only underpins the VW Taigun, but also the current-gen Polo offered globally. Moreover, this platform will also underpin the India-bound Virtus sedan, VW's likely future replacement for the ageing Vento. Dimensionally, the upcoming VW Nivus will be 4,266 mm long and gets a wheelbase measuring 2,566 mm, exactly the same as the international-spec VW Polo.

However, in terms of ground clearance, the VW Nivus will sit 177mm off the ground. Mechanically, the all-new SUV will derive power from a 1.0-litre TSI petrol unit which churns out 128bhp of peak power. The same powertrain can be found in the T-Cross and might also be offered with the Taigun in the future. In order to get the power to the ground, it will come paired to a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Volkswagen Nivus will carry a distinctive design language

Talking about heirarchy, the Nivus SUV will sit above the T-Cross in the carmaker's line-up. The coupe-SUV will be offered in limited trims along with a long list of features. The all-new Nivus will be the first VW car to employ an 8.0-inch ‘Play’ infotainment system. The same infotainment unit which is expected to be offered with the upcoming VW Taigun, slated for launch in India by 2021.
