Volkswagen Polo was the third best selling car in India during May 2020, beating rivals like Ford Freestyle, Toyota Glanza, and even the Hyundai Elite i20.

As the lockdown slowly lifts from over the entire country, car manufacturers are trying to regain sales momentum in India. Although the numbers are slow to rise, the sales volume seems to be steadily rising. Surprisingly, Volkswagen India had a brilliant run with its latest, BS6-compliant Polo in May 2020, selling 1,126 units. The new Polo was the third best-selling car in its class, behind Maruti Baleno and Tata Altroz, in that order.

VW had always had low sales volume when compared to its peers, especially Maruti Baleno and Hyundai Elite i20. While the Baleno still retains its bestseller status, the i20 ranked below the Polo in terms of sales volume with only 878 units sold. Perhaps the recent upgrade to the Polo with a more powerplant (with more power and better fuel economy) and new transmissions may have made a difference. This, however, is only an initial assessment. For a better understanding, we will have to wait and see if the car is able to sustain their positions for the months to follow. Also, Hyundai will soon be launching the next-generation i20, which could also be a reason for the poor sales of the current generation model.
