Next-gen Mahindra XUV500 will not just look different but will even get a new 2.0-litre diesel engine with more power on tap.

Mahindra XUV500 is finally in the last stage of its lifecycle. The second-gen XUV500 will be launched by 2020 and will come with a new engine under the hood - a 180bhp 2.0 L diesel unit. On the other hand, the existing XUV500 is powered by a less powerful 155 BHP 2.2-litre diesel engine.

The next-gen XUV500 will come with a 2.0-litre diesel engine with the peak power of 180bhp

Built on the monocoque architecture just like the current version, the all-new XUV500 will be underpinned by a new platform that could be seen on a C-segment Ford SUV. Apart from the mechanical changes, the XUV500 will look totally different cosmetically. All will be done by a crew of experts from USA, Italy and India. They will be recruited by Mahindra to refresh the car. We can expect the new XUV500 to come with a higher cabin space, especially in the third row. New upmarket features are expected to be seen on the next iteration of Cheetah-inspired SUV.

By its launch, there are a host of models to compete with the XUV500

At its launch back in 2011, the XUV500 was the only model in its price range, sitting above the Scorpio and under the Fortuner. However, by the time the second-gen model would arrive, there will be many new names that will compete in the same segment, including the new Hyundai Creta, Tata H7X and MG SUV as well as Kia SP2i.
