The Indian-spec Lodgy MPV, the rival of Toyota Innova Crysta and Maruti Suzuki Ertiga in India, has poorly earned a zero score in the crash tests carried out by Global New Car Assessment Program (Global NCAP).

The crash tests were included in the ‘Safer Cars For India Campaign’ of Global NACP to introduce safer cars to India. Disappointingly, the Lodgy not only got a zero score for adult safeguard but also a low average two-star score for child security in the rear seats.

The Lodgy deserves this results since it lacks the basic safety features of an MPV such as airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchorage and ABS, which are compulsory in India. To make the matters worse, the body shell of the Lodgy has also been assessed as unreliable.

The test scores for the protection of the driver indicate that due to the absence of airbags, the vehicle poorly offers safety, particularly for the head, which also detrimentally affect the protection rating for other parts of body like knee and chest safeguard.

Commenting on the results, NCAP Technical Director Alejanro Furas said:

"It is surprising and matter of great concern that global car makers are still producing cars that offer sub-standard and zero safety in India, the same models will be considered illegal in their own countries."

Responding to the test rating for the Renault Lodgy, Renault stated that all Renault vehicles observe and even surpass the regulations enforced by ARAI, which proves that Renault has made great improvements in ensuring vehicle safety by complying with regulations for robust vehicle protection. He added that:

“The tests by Global NCAP are conducted at speeds that are higher than those prescribed by the regulatory authorities, not only in India but also in developed markets. The results of Global NCAP have to be seen in that perspective.”
