The Kwid Electric will probably be launched in India by 2022.

As Indian automakers are fiercely competing against each other in the electric vehicles segment, the French carmaker, Renault has also participated in the race to mass shift to electric cars.

Renault has disclosed that it will be launching electric vehicles in India by 2022 to take on the likes of the upcoming Tata Tiago EV, Maruti WagonR EV and Mahindra e2o.

Renault Kwid has been a popular model in India for some time, offering petrol option and either manual or automatic transmissions. The Renault Kwid so far has been the most successful car model of the French company in India market and has helped it compete against Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki in the small car segment. The electric version is being built in China and is projected to appear in the Middle East, Brazil and India automarket.

It has also been disclosed that while the battery-related work is being conducted in China, the largest market for EV, the 2022 Kwid Electric is based on the CMF-A platform already developed in India. The electric version will be possibly ready in India by 2022, preceded by its release in China by 2020.

Renault India MD Sumit Sawhney commented:

"You have to bring the right product to the market. Today, 40% of the cost of an electric vehicle is the battery. Localisation is the key factor if one has to make the value proposition for the consumer attractive."

The 2022 Kwid Electric is anticipated to be priced at Rs 5 lakh. Once launched, it will become the direct rival against Mahindra e20. In the meanwhile, the French automaker is also developing some models for Indian market, i.e. the new-gen Duste and a sub-4 metre MPV, whose launch both will precede that of the Kwid Electric.
