Revealed in December 2018, the Skoda Scala is being considered for Indian launch. Read on to discover some interesting facts about this new premium hatchback.

1. The Skoda Scala has an unusual debut

Unlike most other Skoda cars which have been debuted in Europe, the Scala hatchback made its showcase in Israel. There are two reasons that explain for this difference. Firstly, Israel is the auto market where Skoda is the leading European auto brand. Secondly, it is also the place which, despite all of the challenges in term of geology and politics, has developed as an international centre for start-ups, especially those focusing on automotive technologies.

2. The Skoda Scala has strange dimensions

In the Indian context, its dimensions also make the Skoda Scala outstanding from other hatchbacks. To be more specific, it will measure 4,362mm long, which is almost the same length as a normal medium-sized sedan. Therefore, despite a compact car in the European market as regards price and size, it can also compete against mid-sized sedans in India like Volkswagen Vento, Hyundai Verna, Honda City and Maruti Ciaz. Moreover, being an oversized hatchback, Skoda will directly rival the Volkswagen Golf, the Seat Ibiza and the Ford Focus. Thanks to the 2,649mm wheelbase, this unusual hatch offers an amber cabin to the passengers.

3. Despite the strange dimensions, the Skoda Scala’s exterior design is excellent

The sloping roofline on the top of the Scala hatchback reminds us of a coupe with the roof being a complete glass panel itself. The way the body panels stretch beyond the rear doors makes the hatch look like an estate car. The 18-inch alloy wheels, the exterior lights with crystal effects also contribute to the appeal of the vehicle to not only boy racers but also their mothers as well.

4. The Skoda Scala has an extremely amber and top-notch cabin

When stepping inside the cabin, you must be surprised at how the Scala feels like the bigger and more expensive sedans in terms of both the size and the quality. To be more specific, the seat coverings, the plastics and the driving wheel all give you a solid and premium feeling. The cabin can be available in two options: a dual-tone black-beige or an all-black paint scheme, both of which seem to be of high quality.

The hatchback can accommodate up to four adults. Having said that, only very slim adults or kids can sit comfortably in the middle seat row in a fully-loaded Scala. It can also house two mid-sized suitcases or more since the cargo space can be expanded to 1410 litres when the 60:40-split rear seat row is folded down. The cabin can also be felt more roomy, thanks to the large glass area.

5. The Skoda Scala is packed with a wide array of cutting-edge technologies

A large 9.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system, the largest unit in Skoda’s car portfolio, takes the central position in the dashboard. Different from other Skoda products, the Scala is equipped with an independent touchscreen, which is also used in most Mercedes-Benz and BMW vehicles these days. This system supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Mirror Link, etc. connectivity. More surprisingly, it is as easy to use as the screens in other vehicles like the Octavia and the Kodiaq in India.

Furthermore, it also sports an optional virtual cockpit instead of the conventional instrument cluster. Besides the car info, the navigation feed, the condition of the traffic-aware cruise control, which can operate at the max speed of up to 210kmph can be displayed on this screen. A two-zone temperature control with air conditioner vents in the rear, start push button and heated seats also contribute to the top-notch cabin of the Skoda Scala.

The Skoda Scala hatchback is replete with an extensive list of safety features, leaving the passengers with no worry about safety. The expected safety features list includes

  • 9 airbags

  • ABS with EBD

  • ISOFIX

  • Front, side and rear assist

  • Lane assist

  • Automatic parking

6. The Skoda Scala is available with three engine options

Skoda India is not intending to mass produce the Scala hatchback in India but only opt for some specific groups of buyers with the preference for the vehicle, which means that once launched in India, the Skoda Scala is going to be a niche product. With that in mind, Skoda is likely to bring the top-of-the-line 1.5L TSI petrol motor to India, which can produce a max power of 150PS and a peak torque of 250Nm. Other motor engine options consist of a 1.0L petrol engine which can produce two states of tunes 95PS/175Nm and 115PS/200Nm; a 1.6L diesel motor with 115PS/250Nm; and a 1.0L CNG unit with 90PS/145Nm.

Once launched in India, the Skoda Scala hatchback is expected to be priced at Rs 12 lakh, maybe a little bit too much for a compact hatchback. With this vehicle, which might be brought to India through a CKD route and locally assembled, Skoda India is using this vehicle to target only some niche markets and customers who have a special taste and interest for this car. Having said that, Skoda Scala is what we can look forward to in a Skoda product as a competitor against the new Capture/Creta.
