2020 Honda City has been digitally re-imagined to get a hatchback body style. We are looking forward to seeing this car in the production version in near future

As you may not know, the Honda City was originally the name of a hatchback only. After the City hatchback was discontinued from Honda’s lineup, the name was used for the sedan then. The Indian market has witnessed Honda’s brand image increased with the City sedan which was once among the hottest selling car of its segment. However, the sales of C-segment sedan have fallen significantly in the last few years that has prompted the Japanese carmaker to introduce a next-gen City set to go on sale in our country in the coming weeks.

Based on the fifth-gen Honda City, Kleber Silva, a digital illustrator has worked on some speculative renderings that showcase the City in its hatchback body style and RS treatment. As per the rendered versions, the 2020 Honda City hatchback looks almost the same as the sedan model until the B-pillar. The 5-door hatchback gets a more upright boot in a completely new design, which is slightly chopped to erase the traditional sedan style.

The front end of the car looks stylish with sharp headlights, busy front bumper with the prominent front grille. Besides, it comes with sportier tail lamps and rear bumpers while its cabin should have increased headroom and legroom for the rear. Honestly, we can’t help thinking of the rendered City hatchback car as a more upmarket version of the Honda Jazz with a wider track and more modern LED taillights.

While the Honda Civic already gets a hatchback and a coupe version in the international market, the Honda City is yet to receive this treatment. However, the above digital imagination shows that it would be a great idea, at least in terms of styling design, for Honda to start working on this.

We also do expect that the Japanese auto company will bring in the RS variant of the 2020 Honda City to India in the not-too-distant future. Currently, the Honda City RS is being sold in some international markets with a 1.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine making 122 HP and 173 Nm of torque. The car comes coupled with a CVT with the support of paddle shifters. The claimed fuel mileage of the City RS is 23.8 kmpl for the Thai-spec version.

As for the regular Honda City sedan, it could be merely days from the launch of the next-gen City in India. What we’ve known so far is that the outgoing City will be sold alongside the fifth-gen model in the domestic space. 2020 Honda City will draw the power from a new BS6-compliant 1.5-litre petrol engine that may churn out 120 BHP of max power and 145 Nm of peak torque. There’s also a BS6-spec 1.5-litre diesel mill tuned to produce 100 BHP and 200 Nm in the range. Both powertrains will come coupled with a 6-speed MT and a CVT automatic option. Apart from the new-gen City, Honda is also planning to launch the BS6-compliant Jazz in India with the company teased for the same several weeks ago.
