Last month, a TVC which shows the off-road capabilities of the new-gen Mahindra Thar has been released on the Internet. The SUV was caught on camera during the TVC shoot in Ladakh. Recently, several behind-the-scene images of the new Thar have been released. From the images, we can see that huge efforts have been invested in the TVC making process.
The all-new Mahindra Thar has been confirmed to be offered in two trims: AX (Adventure Series) and LX (Lifestyle Series). One of the most outstanding alterations of the new Thar against the outgoing model is the addition of the 2.0-litre mStalltion turbo gasoline burner and a 6-speed torque converter. The petrol motor can generate 150 PS against 320 Nm (MT) and 320 Nm (AT). Moreover, the new Thar is also powered by a 2.2-litre diesel unit which is good for 130 PS against 300 Nm. The transmission duties will be undertaken by a 6-speed MT as standard across all the variants and an optional torque converter only on the LX trim. A 4WD system will be standard on both the petrol and diesel versions.
The new Mahindra Thar is expected to come with more decent off-road capabilities than the outgoing model, thanks to its upgraded suspension system, enhanced ramp up, departure and approach angles. Moreover, the new SUV will also have a 226mm ground clearance, 650 mm water wading capability and manual shift 4x4 case with low crawl ratio, all of which contribute to its high off-road capabilities.
The 2020 Mahindra Thar will be equipped with a wide range of top-notch features including LED DRLs, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system which supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, electrically adjusted air conditioner, autocruise, a digital MID and steering-mounted controls. While the Mahindra Thar LX will have a four-seater layout, thanks to the forward-facing rear seats, the AX variants will feature a 6-seater configuration, because of its conventional jump seats. In the safety front, the standard safety features of the new Thar will include dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, front seatbelt reminder and rear parking sensors.
The new Mahindra Thar will be launched in the Indian auto market on October 2, 2020, on which the home-grown automaker will also celebrate its Founder's Day. The SUV is expected to be priced from INR 10 lakh to INR 13.5 lakh (ex-showroom). At this price range, the off-roader will directly compete against the upcoming Force Gurkha.
