The compact sedans segment has some competent contenders like Maruti Dzire, Hyundai Aura, Honda Amaze, Tata Tigor, and Ford Aspire.

In the Indian Auto market today, small hatchback cars are extremely popular, owing to the affordable price and low maintenance cost. Following the dominant hatchback segment is the emerging SUV space. While these two segments have taken up a majority share of the market, the sedan segment is struggling to keep their sales stable. Still, the demand for sedan still exists, and there are many brilliant offerings for you to choose from. For those are considering purchasing a new compact sedan, here is the list of the best compact sedans in India suggested by car experts from IndianAuto.

Hyundai Aura

The current sedan range of the second largest car manufacturer, Hyundai, only includes two models, compact sedan Hyundai Aura and full-size sedan Hyundai Verna. The Hyundai Aura was updated earlier this year.

2020 Hyundai Aura is now in line with the new BSVI emission norms. This sedan is now available with three engine options, 1.2-litre petrol and diesel engine and a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. The turbocharged petrol engine is capable of making a top power of 100 PS and 172 Nm and only comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox. On the other hand, both the 1.2-litre diesel and 1.2-litre petrol variants are offered with a choice of either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT. In total, the Hyundai Aura is offering up to 6 powertrain combinations for its customers.

The new Honda Aura features a similar design to the newly launched Grand i10 Nios. At the starting price of Rs 5.79 lakh, the compact sedan comes across as a sensibly affordable compact sedan. Moreover, the top-spec model of the Aura is also updated with a wide variety of features including wireless charging, projector fog light, cruise control and more.

Tata Tigor

Tata Tigor is the sedan version of the popular Tiago hatchback. It is available in six variants, but with one single powertrain option which was the 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine-5-speed manual gearbox. However, after receiving updates recently, the same engine gets an additional transmission option of 5-speed AMT gearbox. The petrol engine can make a maximum torque of 85 PS and a top torque of 114 Nm.

This sedan gets some highlight features including 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display with Apple Auto and Android Carplay support, voice command function, electrically adjustable folding ORVMs. Along with the BSVI update for the engine, the Tata Tigor also receives several cosmetic twists, for example, revised bumper with LED DRLs, new projector headlights, and dual-tone diamond-cut alloy wheels.

Tata Tigor offers a nice combination of decent mileage, great comfort and attractive pricing which undercuts most cars in the segment. 2020 Tata Tigor retails at the starting price of Rs 5.75 lakh and the top-of-the-line XZ+ trim with ATM is available at Rs 7.49 lakh.

Honda Amaze

The generation upgrade of the Honda Amaze back in 2018 has marked a significant milestone for this nameplate. After earning the updates, the second-gen Honda Amaze has won a larger share in the compact sedan segment. The success of the new-gen Honda Amaze can be achieved thanks to the enhanced interior with improved driving dynamics and better comfort and more features.

Currently, Honda has delivered some new changes to the Amaze in accordance with the upcoming BSVI. This time, the Amaze’s engine range which comprises of 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.5 diesel unit is revised. While the petrol engine is good for 90PS and 110Nm, the diesel unit’s power output is rated at 100PS of power and 200Nm of torque. Both engines are offered with two choices of transmissions, a 5-speed manual gearbox and an optional CVT. Honda Amaze’s price range goes from Rs 6.09 lakh and goes up to 10.99 lakh.

Ford Aspire

In this list of the best compact sedans in India, Ford Aspire holds the lowest sales figures. Even though this car is less popular than other models mentioned here, it is still a decent option with its own advantages, well-equipped lower-range variants, good riding quality and driveability.

The Aspire comes available in four trims, Ambiente, Trend, Titanium, and Titanium+. There are two engines on offer, 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol and a BS6-compliant 1.5-litre diesel engine. The petrol unit can generate 96PS and 119Nm while the diesel engine is good for 100PS and 215Nm. These two engine options are provided from Trend trim upwards and the entry-level Ambiente is only available with the petrol engine. Both diesel and petrol comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox. No automatic option is included on the Ford Aspire’s range. The car is priced between Rs. 5.99 lakh and Rs. 8.34 lakh.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire

Coming last on the list is the Maruti Dzire which is also the leading vehicles in the segment of compact sedans in India. The segment-leading vehicle is appraised for its hot-looking design, a long list of features, and excellent ride quality. All these good quality has guaranteed the dominant position of this car in the compact sedan segment.

Maruti Dzire is available with two engine options that include 1.2-litre petrol engine and 1.3-diesel diesel engine. The former makes 83PS of peak power and 113Nm of maximum torque while the latter churns out 75PS and 190Nm. The 5-speed manual gearbox is offered as standard transmission option. It also gets an option 5-speed automated manual transmission.

In terms of features, Maruti Dzire is equipped with automatic LED projector headlights with DRLs, rear parking camera with sensor, 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple Carplay. It also features some interior features including keyless entry push-button engine start/stop, automatic climate control, AC vents, electronically adjustable and foldable ORVMs. On the safety front, Maruti Dzire is offered with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensor with camera, co-driver seatbelt reminder, speed alert, brake assist as well as ISOFIX child seat anchors. The car is currently priced from Rs. 5.82 lakh to Rs. 9.52 lakh.
