While the Hyundai Verna came in 2020 as an all-new model, the Volkswagen Vento is a decade-old model with the new powertrain. But the Vento surprised us when we pitted it against the Verna in an acceleration test.

The Volkswagen Vento has been on sale in India for a decade now, launching way back in 2010. While international markets have got a new-generation model, the Vento soldiers on in India with mild refreshes and facelifts. The Vento got a recent update for 2021 which comes with new BS-VI compliant engines and minor tweaks to the exterior like a new grille. It gets a new 1-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine and we tested its acceleration against its segment rival, the all-new Hyundai Verna.  The Verna is an all-new model for this year, and we have the 1.5-litre IVT version to test against the Vento.

As you’ll see in the video above, we are pitting the Volkswagen Vento against the Hyundai Verna for a 0-100 kmph test. There will be three runs for each car, and we’ll take the quickest one for the comparison. For the first run, the Vento reaches 100 kmph in 9.46 seconds while the Verna takes 13.80 seconds. Second time around, The VW does the 0-100 kmph run in 9.52 seconds compared to the Hyundai’s 13.59 seconds. Both cars post their personal bests in the third and final run, the Vento taking 9.39 seconds to reach 100 kmph and the Verna taking 13.12 seconds for the same. As you’ll see from the numbers, the Verna was over 3.5 seconds slower than the Vento in each run. This is because even though the Verna has a bigger engine, the Vento’s turbocharged unit makes more torque which helps the initial acceleration phase. Also, the Vento comes with a slick-shifting manual while the Verna gets an IVT gearbox, and like all CVTs, it has a rubber band effect which doesn’t work well when called for quick acceleration.

The Volkswagen Vento is powered by 3-pot TSI turbo-petrol instead, which makes 110 PS/175 Nm of peak power and torque figures and came mated with a 6-speed manual for today’s test. The Hyundai Verna comes with a 1.5-litre N/A petrol which churns out peak power and torque figures of 115 PS/142 Nm which is mated to an IVT transmission.
