Women look for different qualities in a car than men. Check out our list of best cars for women in India, along with on-road prices in various cities in India.
Traditionally speaking, men have been the majority audience when it comes to the automobile market. That, however, doesn’t mean there is a lack of female buyers. As more and more women are entering the workforce and becoming independent, there has been a steady and strong rise in female buyership in India. Now, while cars aren’t being specifically catered for the fairer sex at the moment, some cars are better suited to/preferred by ladies. We asked around, read a few surveys, went through a few opinions, etc., to determine which are some of the best cars for women in India, and here is what we came up with.
Renault’s facelifted Kwid is quite a nice looking vehicle, which offers good efficiency, moderate power, and is extremely affordable. Its trump card though, is the availability of an AMT automatic transmission, which immensely increases the driveability and practicality of the car. Not only that, but its tiny dimensions also make it easy to manoeuvre in traffic, which is an added bonus, especially if you are a new driver. Sadly, the Renault Kwid isn’t a perfect car. In the interest of keeping costs low, the car skips on some essential safety features. While ABS and EBD are present, Airbag is only available on the driver-side. If only the safety was better taken care of, then this would have been a wonderful car. Still, for a budget-minded woman, the Kwid is a fine choice.
The Maruti Swift is a cuter option here, as well as one for the enthusiast. If you are a woman who loves to hit the highways on weekends, the Swift will make keep you happy for the long haul. Its petrol as well as diesel engines are great performers, while also being extremely fuel-efficient. You can also get this car with a 5-speed AMT automatic, alongside the standard 5-speed manual gearbox. The handling of the car is extremely fun too. It is also a very pretty car, which adds some brownie points. The Swift is not only one of the best cars for women in India, but also among the most well-sorted models in its price range.
The Maruti Baleno is the same as the Swift, but slightly bigger, slightly more spacious, and slightly more conservatively styled. The last one could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your personal taste. One thing is for sure though, where the Swift is sporty, the Baleno is classy. It is powered by the same engines as the Swift, petrol and diesel, and the same transmissions as well, including an AMT. Not only that, but you also get a mild-hybrid variant, for a more environment-friendly driving experience.
Up next in our list of best cars for women in India is the Maruti Vitara Brezza. More women prefer to buy small SUVs than other types cars, and it’s not hard to see why. SUVs are more spacious, practical, and have better ground clearance, the last one being a need more than a necessity on Indian roads. So this brings us to the best-selling sub-4-metre SUV we have, the Maruti Brezza. With its clean styling and typical SUV looks, it sure has a good road presence, and with the availability of an AMT gearbox, it sure is easy to drive.
While Hyundai has already launched the latest-generation i10 in India, the Grand i10 Nios, the previous-generation model still remains on sale in the market. Now, if you aren’t opposed to the idea of paying extra cash for the newer, more aggressive-looking model, we’d suggest you take a look at the previous-gen Grand i10. Not only is it cute-looking, it offers a good amount of space and is extremely comfortable to sit in, it also offers a very soft and supple ride, which helps while driving over broken Indian roads. The engine is also extremely efficient, with the options of petrol, diesel, and even CNG-driven models!
Hyundai i20 is an extremely elegant and premium looking hatchback, with emphasis on comfort and ride quality. In those aspects, well, it actually is a brilliant city car. The Hyundai Elite i20 offers a petrol and a diesel engine option, paired to either a 5-speed manual or a CVT gearbox. Now, while a CVT is extremely unexciting to drive, the benefits in terms of smoothness and fuel economy cannot be overlooked. As a comfortable, premium-looking city car, the Elite i20 would suit you well. Like the Swift, the Hyundai Elite is not only one of the best cars for women in India but also a great option in its price range for all sorts of buyers.
Now, we’ve already covered that women like SUVs, which brings to the best-selling compact SUV (longer than 4-metres), the Hyundai Creta. If you think the Brezza is a little too small to be a proper SUV, but the Scorpio is a little too manly-looking, then the Hyundai Creta is a brilliant option to consider. It is quite large, and thus more spacious, but not too large, thus not very difficult to drive in traffic. It also has funky looks and great-road presence, so wherever you go, you be arriving there in style.
The Creta offers three engine options, a small 1.4-litre diesel engine, a larger 1.6-litre diesel engine, and a 1.6-litre petrol. The 1.6-litre diesel and petrol engines also offer automatic transmission option, along with the standard 5-speed manual. Due to this, the Hyundai Creta is not only one of the best cars for women in India, but one of the best car in India overall.
Honda Brio is perhaps one of the cutest looking cars in the Indian market, with lots of quirky design elements that make it stand out of the crowd. The highlight features include the bulbous headlamps and single-piece rear-windshield/tailgate. If that wasn’t enough to draw your attention, then get this; Honda is discontinuing the car soon (production has already halted), so you can pick the most-affordable Honda car in India right now with huge discounts! It also gets an Automatic transmission on the top variant, which is an added advantage for the urban-dwelling lady.
If you care about brands, and would prefer a fancy badge on the hood of your car, well, then you should opt for a European car. A Skoda should capture your fancy perhaps? This Czechoslovakian manufacturer has made a reputation for itself as the maker of luxury cars, and with a portfolio consisting of Octavia, Laura, and Superb, that reputation is well deserved. As for small cars, Skoda Rapid is the only option in the company’s arsenal right now, which is quite sad. We’d love to see the Fabia be reintroduced once again. Still, the Rapid is an excellent choice, if a little expensive one. It has wonderful interiors, plush seats, and brilliant build quality. Also, it offers a DSG transmission as an option, which is the best automatic gearbox to have. The Rapid is truly one of the best cars for women in India.
The Mahindra Scorpio looks very butch and manly. While some lady-folk prefer that, a large majority would skip this vehicle. Thankfully Mahindra has plenty of SUVs in its line-up, so you have plenty of choices here. The KUV100 is great option too, but is a little too compact, feeling more like a competitor to the Wagon R, rather than the Brezza. The best option, thus, is the Mahindra XUV300. It is compact enough to squeeze into tight city lanes, but large enough to feel like an SUV. The space inside is impressive, although the boot space could have been better. The highlight of the car, however, is the engine and transmission options. Now, although the XUV300 is more expensive than its competition, it has the best engines under its hood, powerful yet efficient. There is also an AMT automatic gearbox on offer, which is a boon for urban driving.
