Hyundai Creta

The first car in our list of Best Cars In India Under Rs 20 Lakh is the popular compact SUV from the South Korean automaker, which is currently the best-selling SUV in the country and sells even more than some cheaper vehicles. First introduced 5 years ago, the Creta has been the go-to compact SUV choice ever since its launch and remains so even though newer rivals have arrived. The second-generation model on sale currently comes with an all-new design and comes loaded with features like a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, BlueLink Connected Suite and others.

Prices for the Hyundai Creta range from Rs 9.99 lakh – Rs 17.53 lakh. It has 3 engines that are on offer – 2 petrol and 1 diesel. You get a 1.5-litre petrol making which makes 115 PS and 144 Nm of max power and torque figures while the range-topping 1.4-litre turbo petrol churns out 140 PS and 242 Nm of peak power and torque. Meanwhile, the Diesel is a 1.5-litre four-pot which puts out max power and torque figures of 115 PS and 250 Nm respectively. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed automatic transmission or a 7-speed DCT auto in the turbo-petrol.

Tata Safari

Next, on our list of Best Cars In India Under Rs 20 Lakh, we have the third-gen Safari, which was recently launched in India. Looking nothing like its predecessor, it is based on the same OMEGARC platform the Harrier sits on, and looks quite similar to it except for the extra length for the third row of seats. The main changes are behind the B-pillar with a changed roofline, increased height, and larger rear overhangs. Visual changes include chrome surrounds on the headlights, a new front grille, and new LED taillights. The interior of the Safari is similar to the Harrier as well but gets white upholstery instead of black, panoramic sunroof, an electronic handbrake and an electrically adjustable driver’s seat.

The Tata Safari is powered by a 2-litre Fiat-sourced turbo-diesel engine which makes 170 PS and 350 Nm of max power and torque figures. It can be mated to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. Prices for the 2021 Safari range from Rs 14.69 lakh – Rs 21.45 lakh.

Honda City

Though the Indian consumer is really into SUVs currently, the Honda City gamely carries the flag for sedans. The City is still a top-selling sedan because of its now-legendary nameplate and is a better buy if you want to be chauffeur-driven. The length of a sedan also means it comes with a much bigger boot and scores higher in the practicality department.

The fifth-generation Honda City comes with features like Honda’s latest touchscreen infotainment system which supports Alexa voice commands, auto climate control, sunroof, and more. Prices range from Rs 10.99 lakh – Rs 14.84 lakh. The City has the option of one diesel and one petrol engine, both 1.5-litre units. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual or a CVT automatic.

MG Hector

MG Motors entered India with its Hector and Hector Plus in 2019 and was one of the first vehicles on sale to come with in-built internet connectivity. The Hector range recently got an update this year which added a 7-seater option to the Hector Plus and a few visual changes. It also gets updated features like an automatic tailgate, panoramic sunroof, a Chit-Chat i-SMART Next Gen interface, 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment and a tyre pressure monitoring system along with the existing feature list.

Prices for the MG Hector and Hector Plus range from Rs 12.89 lakh – Rs 19.22 lakh. Powertrain options include a 2-litre diesel and 1.5-litre petrol engine. The former makes 170 PS/350 Nm of peak figures while the latter makes max figures of 143 PS/250 Nm. Both engines can be mated to a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed DCT auto, or a CVT gearbox.

Mahindra Thar

The fifth and last entrant in our list of Best Cars In India Under Rs 20 Lakh is the 2020 Mahindra Thar. Though it may look a bit out of place compared to the other choices here, but is just as good and arguably the most striking of them all. The second-generation Thar is a vast improvement over its beloved predecessor, and  Mahindra has developed it to become just as good being a daily driver as it is good going off-road. The Thar gets all the creature comforts you can possibly fathom in a sub Rs 20 lakh vehicle, but also comes with a visual design that makes it stand out in a crowd. No wonder waiting periods have stretched into 2022 as Indian consumers have lapped it up.

The 2020 Mahindra Thar is priced between Rs 12.10 lakh and Rs 14.14 lakh. The SUV gets 2 engine options, a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel, and a 2-litre turbo-petrol. The oil-burner makes 130 PS/320 Nm of peak figures while the petrol makes 150 PS/320 Nm of max figures. Transmission options for both the powertrains are a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic with a low range box. Being a pukka 4x4, the Thar gets a transfer case and a mechanically locking centre-differential as standard.
