Highways in India are among the most dangerous in the world. Although some new fast highways and expressways are becoming more operational in India, road safety still remains one of the most serous concerns in the country. A recent accident which involves three vehicles and, well, a cow, shows how dangerous these roads can be. Firstly, let’s have a look at the video.

What actually happened?

As per the video, a cow was crossing the highway by running across it. A sedan was trying to overtake a truck from the left-hand side (which is wrong, we should point out), and the truck blocks the view of the sedan. When the sedan driver notices the cow, he brakes the car suddenly. A Mahindra Marazzo, which is behind the sedan also applies the brakes to avoid hitting the sedan. Unfortunately, a bus which is coming from behind could not stop in time and hit the Marazzo, which hit the sedan in the rear, causing a serious accident involving three vehicles and the cow. Luckily, according to the report, no human and no animal have been injured in the accident.

Who was to blame here?

The sedan driver overtook the truck from the left-hand side, which is very dangerous. Nevertheless, almost nobody follows lane regulations in India; therefore, following these disciplines on the highways is quite difficult. Slow-moving vehicles including trucks usually hog the fast lane and remain there as long as they wish, which helps explain why most motorists overtake these vehicles from the left-hand side.

Heavy vehicles usually have a lower speed limit than the light ones, due to the former’s need for more distance to stop. Therefore, it is impossible for heavy vehicles like trucks to stop in a small distance. So, ideally, motorists should ensure to maintain a safe distance between their vehicles and the heavy ones. Unfortunately, hardly any motorists follow this rule in India.

Motorists are advised to maintain a safe distance between them and the heavy vehicles to avoid accidents like this.

Having said that, the biggest culprit in this incident is actually the cow which ran across the highway. If the sedan had hit the cow, there would have been a lot more damage to life and to other cars following. It is almost impossible to predict these animals and the direction in which they go. Stray animals are quite a serious problem on Indian roads. High reflective tapes had been put on the horns of these animals to make them more visible at night. However, it is high time that they were removed from the roads.

Many accidents have been reported to be caused by blindly overtaking. All the motorists are advised to drive safely on the roads, maintain a safe distance between their vehicle and others, and be sure of the roads in the front before doing the overtake, especially on the Indian roads which are well-known for low quality and chaos.
