Check out this modified Mahindra Roxor which wears tank-like shoes for improved off-road performance.

Although Mahindra makes some extremely rugged vehicles with a lot of off-road capability, there are people in this world who believe there is plenty of room for improvement. This leads to some brilliant modifications, like the one example we have below.

Modified Mahindra Thar based Roxor

The picture above shows a modified Mahindra Roxor with caterpillar tracks instead of wheels. Mahindra Roxor is the US-spec version of our beloved Thar in India. It is sold as a low-volume recreational vehicle by Mahindra Automotive North America (MANA), assembled at the company’s plant in Detroit. It gets a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine, the same unit which was sold in India until a while back. Maximum power is a humble 64 PS and peak torque is a healthy 195 Nm. A four-wheel-drive system and a 5-speed manual gearbox are standard in the car.

The tank-like caterpillar tracks on the car offer better grip than traditional wheels due to their larger contact patch with the ground. This helps increase its off-road prowess. Thankfully, the torquey diesel motor has enough to grunt to support such a system. Mahindra Roxor has been praised by many American car reviewers for its go-anywhere ability. The car also attracts a lot of attention due to its old-school, 'World War II' era design. Sadly, the car isn’t road legal in America, which is why it is only sold as a recreational buggy rather than an actual car.

In other news, Mahindra will soon be unveiling the next-generation Thar in India. The new model will not only be more powerful than before, but it will also be safer and more comfortable as well. There will be a new diesel engine, and for the first time ever in a Thar, a petrol engine as well. We expect the same to make its way to the US as the new Roxor. With appropriate safety upgrades, maybe the Roxor might finally be street legal there as well.
