Do You Know How Fast The Tata Sierra Turbo Was? [VIDEO]

Tata Sierra is a boxy SUV that came with wraparound glass windows for the second-row seats. It was launched in 1991 and was and was a behemoth in terms of proportions. Also, it was decently loaded in terms of equipment inside the cabin. It offered amenities like power steering, power windows, and air conditioning. It was based on the same chassis as the Tata Telcoline pickup truck, which was underpinned by Mercedes-Benz’s T2 platform. It has been almost 2 decades since Tata Motors stopped the production of Sierra. But there’s no reduction observed in the car’s fan following. However, do you know what its top speed was? We tell you.

We came across the above video on Sunil Chakola's YouTube channel. In the 11-year-old video, it can be seen that the owner of the car attempts a top speed run and clocks 160 kmph on the speedometer. In today’s era, it isn’t much. Even the B-segment cars can easily pull themselves up to this speed. But in the late 90s, it used to be a big deal.

Helping the Sierra pull off this magic trick is a 2.0L oil burner sourced from Peugeot. The turbocharged 4-cylinder diesel engine was capable of generating a peak power output of 87 HP. It came mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Also, the Sierra was offered with a 4WD layout with manually locking hubs at the front and a solid axle at the rear. The system could control full-time/part-time engagements via grafting technique. This system was also used on older Land Rovers.

Recently at Auto Expo 2020, Tata Motors showcased the Sierra EV Concept, which was also the showstopper at the manufacturer’s pavilion. It borrowed design cues from the original Sierra like the wraparound glass windows and 2-door configuration. The Sierra EV Concept’s production version is expected to offer a runabout of around 500 km on a single charge.  It will be powered by Tata’s Ziprtron EV technology and is expected to go on sale by the end of 2021.
