The Jeep Wrangler is one of the most off-road focused on sale today. This means that with its high ground clearance gives the SUV a high centre-of-gravity. Watch how this Wrangler rolled over due to this in a side impact crash test.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has released two videos on its YouTube channel recently which shows the crash tests performed on the current JL-generation of the Jeep Wrangler. In the driver-side small overlap test in the first video, the SUV rolled over onto its side upon impact, prompting the IIHS to hand it a Marginal overall safety rating. The IIHS stated that it conducted two driver-side small overlap crash tests using an MY 2019 Jeep Wrangler four-door, and both tests yielded unfavourable results.

The Institute’s official website said, “In both the Institute's tests, the vehicle tipped onto its passenger side after striking the barrier. The partial rollover presents an additional injury risk beyond what the standard criteria are intended to measure in small overlap frontal crash tests. A vehicle tipping onto its side is not an acceptable outcome for a frontal crash and, as a result, the Wrangler's overall rating was downgraded to marginal.”

While the 2018-2020 Jeep Wrangler score an overall Marginal rating, which is just one rank above Poor, it scored quite well in driver safety measures. The IIHS says the crash test dummy’s “survival space” was maintained well, and the risk of injuries to the legs and feet were low. The testing organization did not speculate on what caused the rollover, but judging by the video, the Wrangler’s high centre of gravity was a big factor in the result. The IIHS has also released a video of the Wrangler in a 31-mph side-impact crash test, in which it earned a Good overall rating.

Jeep has recently launched the Wrangler as a locally assembled product, which has brought down the prices of the 4x4 by a considerable margin. Coming in two trims – Sahara and Rubicon, the SUV is now priced between Rs 53.90 – Rs 57.90 lakh, ex-showroom. It is powered by four-pot turbocharged petrol that makes 270 PS and 400 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively and is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Wrangler Rubicon variant is a hardcore off-roader and comes with a more advanced 4x4 system with front and rear locking differentials, electronic sway bar disconnect, and larger approach, break-over and departure angles. The Rubicon also rides on off-road-focused BFGoodrich KO2 Mud-Terrain tyres.
