There’s no denying the fact that Kia Sonet is one of the latest and biggest new car launches in India for the year 2020. Despite being on sale for just a couple of months, the Kia Sonet has already made it to the list of best-selling cars in India thanks to its stylish look, well-loaded cabin, multiple engines and smart pricing strategy on tap. How the Kia Sonet performs in the real world have raised some curiosity in many people’s mind, especially when compared with its rivals like the Ford Ecosport. In line with that, we just found a video showing a Kia Sonet Diesel MT and a Ford Ecosport Diesel MT competing in a drag race. Let’s see the winner here.

Before getting into the details, let’s take a quick look at what's offered under the bonnets of the Kia Sonet and Ford Ecosport. The Kia car comes with three engine options in its heart, including an 83 PS/ 115 Nm 1.2-litre petrol, a 120 PS/ 172 Nm 1.0-litre turbo-petrol and a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel unit with two states of tune – 100 PS/ 240 Nm and 115 PS/ 250 Nm of torque. Do note that the oil burner delivers the highest torque figures among these mills and that will translate into better acceleration. The Ford Ecosport comes with 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel motor, which can churn out 122 PS/ 149 Nm and 100 PS/ 215 Nm of torque, respectively. Clearly, the Kia Sonet and Ford Ecosport share the same power of 100 PS while the Sonet gets 25 Nm more torque than the American counterpart.

In the first round, the Sonet and Ecosport started with the speed of 20 km/h and both cars managed to stay on par with each other for the first couple of seconds. However, it’s the Ford Ecosport which took the step ahead and becomes the winner, thereby indicating that the Blue Oval gets a better mid-range power compared with the Kia Sonet.

At the second round, we can see both of the cars raced with the entry speed of 0 kmph. This time around, the Sonet took a notch above the Ecosport and managed to extend the gap gradually. Finally, the Kia offering won over the Ford with ease. In the final round, the Sonet did take a lead over the Ecosport initially but the race was then stopped due to a car suddenly showing up in the Sonet’s lane.

It is quite apparent that the significant torque discrepancy has helped the Sonet win the race effortlessly. Also, the lighter bodyweight of the Sonet gives it a better acceleration as well, which might be another reason contributing to its victory. While the Kia Sonet Diesel AT variant can produce 15 PS and 10 Nm more than the diesel-MT model, we do expect that it would be even quicker than the manual version. Currently, the Kia Sonet is priced in the range of around Rs 6.71 – 12.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) while the Ford Ecosport is sitting in the price bracket of around Rs 8.19 – 11.73 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
