With the Kia Sonet launch is just around the corner, the already-contested subcompact SUV segment is set to see a lot of heat. Kia just shed the veils from the Kia Sonet last month and the subcompact SUV has received overwhelmingly positive responses from the Indian buyers from the very word go. That has put almost all of its market rivals in the segment including the Tata Nexon on high alert.

While the Tata Nexon is also one of the best-established players in the sub-4m SUVs department. The entry of the Seltos sibling will certainly pose a major threat to the position of Tata Nexon in the space. With a lot of modern gadgets and many of which are first in the segment, how can the Kia Sonet SUV fares against the Tata Nexon on paper? Kia Sonet vs Tata Nexon Exterior Design: Which one looks better?

When the Kia Seltos first set its footstep into the Indian land, the mid-size SUV sparked quite a surge of excitement with its lavish design. Its smaller sibling, Kia Sonet SUV also made the same and even more. Similar to the Tata Nexon, the Kia Sonet brings a fair share of freshness and aggression in the crowded segment. Both cars have a lot of offer on the table and get quite a different design approach. While the Kia Sonet gets a sportier and more aggressive look with many sharp lines and curves on its body stance, the Nexon looks rather bolder with some styling inspirations from the Range Rover Sport.

At the front, Kia’s sub-four-metre SUV features a signature 3D stepwell geometric Tiger-nose front grille which has been tweaked a little for a fresher look, large centre air dam with red accents, sharp-looking headlamps with full-LED DRLs along with clamshell bonnet, etc. The flared wheel arches combined with a set of 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels also give the car a more muscular look.

On the other hand, the Tata Nexon comes with a more coupe-SUV like stance with its rear profile being styled distinctively. The Tata Nexon gets big headlamps which take some inspiration from the Range Rover Sport, high bonnet line, a prominent front grille with tri-arrow design patterns, fog lamps with dual-tone surrounds and many others.

Although it’s still some weeks away towards the launch of the Kia Sonet, the features package of the Sonet has been revealed through the leaked brochure scan. The all-new Kia Sonet will be equipped with a lot of modern features, many of which are first in the segment. It comes with a massive 10.25-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto & Apple CarPlay support and UVO connected car tech, digital instrument cluster, wireless charging system, smart air purifier, ventilated front seats, Bose-premium sound system and six airbags (for the top-spec trim).

Meanwhile, the Tata Nexon is loaded with a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Harman-sourced sound system, leather-wrapped steering, cruise control, height-adjustable seatbelts, 8-speaker Harman audio system, automatic headlamps, iRA connected car tech and a cooled glovebox. The Tata Nexon doesn’t come in a choice of six airbags yet which the Sonet has to offer.

Speaking of safety, the first 5-star rated Indian SUV offers dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability program, electronic traction control, hydraulic brake assist, hill-hold control, reverse parking sensors, roll-over mitigation, driver seatbelt with pre-tensioners and speed alert as standard. Additionally, the top-end trims can also get front fog lamps and rear parking camera as some extra options.

As standard, the Kia Sonet is coming with some provisions like dual front airbags, ABS, EBD, speed alert, reverse parking sensors and driver’s seatbelt with pre-tensioners. The higher-spec trims are likely to offer six airbags, ESC, hill-start assists, brake assist and high-speed alert system. The top-spec trims, in the meantime, offers front fog lamps and reverse parking camera as well. It turns out that the Tata Nexon gets a lot more safety features as standard while the top-spec Kia Sonet is loaded to the gills with safety essentials.

Kia Sonet vs Tata Nexon Engines: Which One Is More Powerful?

The upcoming Kia Sonet will come with three engine options – a 1.2 petrol engine making 83 PS/ 114 Nm, a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel motor good for 100 PS and 240 Nm along with a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol mill generating 120 PS/ 171 Nm. Transmission choices for the new Sonet will include a 5-speed MT (for 1.2-litre petrol), a 6-speed MT and 6-speed AT (for the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol) along with a 6-speed MT and 7-speed DCT (for the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit).

The Tata Nexon just gets two engine options available on offer. The 1.2-litre turbo-petrol can develop a maximum power of 120 PS and a peak torque of 170 Nm while the 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel mill can generate 110 PS / 260 Nm of peak torque. The Tata Nexon can be had with a 6-speed MT and a 6-speed AMT as an option.
