Check out this modified Maruti 800 which gets an extreme off-road makeover and has been turned into an SUV-ish contraption.

Maruti 800 is one of the most iconic cars in the Indian auto industry. It was the first lightweight, front-wheel-drive passenger car in the country, and was responsible for shaping the market into its current form. In its production run of over 31 years, it only saw one generation change, and that too quite early in its life. The second-generation model remained virtually unchanged for nearly three decades, and was also the best-selling car in India till the Alto came along. With a car as popular as the Maruti 800, we’re bound to see plenty of modified examples here and there. We have one such modified model here, which has been specially built for off-road shenanigans.

1st Ever Modified Maruti 800 4x4 | BANKS CUSTOM

The video above has been posted by a YouTube channel called BANKS CUSTOM, and the owner of the car is Deepraj Chari. This off-road-ready Maruti 800 has been mounted on a ladder-frame chassis taken from the Maruti Gypsy. The suspension of the vehicle is also custom, built to support the extra weight. The suspension travel is also quite long, as should be on a proper off-roader. The car sits on massive 30-inch rubber (Maxxis MT) and the ground clearance 580 mm.

For added water wading capability, this modified Maruti 800 also gets a snorkel. The engine and drivetrain have also been lifted from the Gypsy. The powerplant is a 1.3-litre ‘G-series’ petrol engine, which generates 80 PS and 103 Nm of peak power and torque. It is paired to a 5-speed gearbox and a 4X4 system. The livery on the car is quite magnificent as well, and there is a custom bumper at the front with a pair of auxiliary lights mounted on it. These lamps offer cornering illumination as well. Other than that, there is a custom cooling system and an aftermarket exhaust.

As per the owner of the car, this modified Maruti 800/Gypsy took almost Rs 3 lakh to build, which is actually not a lot. In fact, you won’t find plenty of second-hand SUVs in the used market in this price range. That said, such extensive modification turn a car illegal in the eyes of the law.
