In Kufri, Himachal Pradesh, 2 Maruti Baleno hatchbacks have crashed into each other in a high-speed head-on collision
The country is under a nationwide lockout for over 2 months now. However, the government is now lifting the curfew in a phased manner to ensure the minimum transmission of the contagious disease. Interestingly, keeping the citizens locked inside their houses helped in reducing the number of road accidents. With the lockdown starting to ease-off, report of the first major road accident has come from Kufri, Himachal Pradesh. The mishap took place near Theog village. It involved 2 Maruti Baleno hatchbacks, which collided with each other in an off-set head-on pattern. Fortunately, drivers of both cars are safe and have not suffered any injuries.
As the accident took place on NH5, we can expect them to be at relatively high speeds. It can be observed in the video that the mirrors of the cars have turned to the other side, which gives a hint of how fast the cars were at the time of the impact. Also, the cars have suffered major damage on their respective front ends. Front bumper and bonnet of the cars have completely deformed. Driver side headlamp and fender are the other parts that absorbed the energy of the impact. Radiators of the cars have also suffered damages in the accident.
Maruti Baleno has scored a 3-star rating at the Euro NCAP crash test facility. It is underpinned by the much publicized HEARTECT platform. Maruti claims that Baleno’s front crumple zone has been designed to absorb the maximum possible energy of a crash. And science can be seen working well in reality. The cabin spaces of both the cars are intact and have not observed deformation at any point. Also, the airbags in both the cars deployed at the right time, which further helped in saving the drivers.
However, it can be seen that the road where the accident took place is fairly wide, which is not always the case in the mountains. Therefore one should drive with high attention when hustling the wheel around the twisties. Driving in hilly areas is often considered a tough task, but it is all about keeping your patience and attention intact as you don’t know what is coming your way at the next blind turn. Thus, driving on these roads at a low speed is the key.
