Last month, Maruti Baleno and Hyundai i20 managed to outsell the entire Tata Motors' lineup in terms of overall sales in January this year.

The fight for top-2 positions in the premium-hatchback space is always between the Hyundai i20 and Maruti Baleno. While the Tata Altroz is also a new contender here, it manages to clock decent figures on the sales tally. In January this year, Maruti Baleno topped the sales chart for the premium-hatchback segment with a total sale of 16,648 units, while registering a drop of 19 per cent on a YoY basis. The Hyundai i20, on the other hand, managed to clock a figure of 8,505 units on the sales chart with a YoY growth of 5 per cent. The Tata Altroz too found 7,378 buyers for itself in the same month. Interestingly, the sum of sales figures clocked by Maruti Baleno & Hyundai i20 is almost equal to the total of all Tata cars, which were sold in January this year.

Maruti Baleno and Hyundai i20 Sell As Much As Entire Tata Lineup

In the first month of this year, Tata Motors sold a total of 26,980 units. For the same month, the sum of Maruti Baleno and Hyundai i20’s sales figures is 25,153, which is marginally lesser than the total of all Tata cars sold in Jan 2021. While the Maruti Baleno and Hyundai i20 have their own USPs, Tata Motors is often seen trolling the Japanese-duo. Recently, the indigenous carmaker released a new image where the Tata Altroz is asking the segment kings to join it over for a crash date. This was done to showcase the 5-star crash-test rating of the Altroz.

Talking of the powertrain options, Maruti Baleno is the only car here that misses out on a diesel engine. It is solely offered with a 1.2L petrol engine that comes in two states of tunes – 83 PS/113 Nm and 90 PS/113 Nm. It is offered with two transmission choices – 5-speed MT and CVT. The Hyundai i20 is available with three engine options – 1.0L turbo-petrol, 1.5L diesel, and 1.2L petrol. The gearbox options on the i20 include a 5-speed MT, 6-speed MT, CVT, 6-speed iMT and 7-speed DCT. With the Altroz, buyers get to choose between three engine options – 1.2L NA petrol, 1.2L turbo-petrol, and 1.5L diesel. However, the Altroz is offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox only.
