Maruti Baleno Sells More Than Hyundai Elite i20, Tata Altroz, VW Polo and Honda Jazz Put Together

Maruti Baleno is a premium hatchback offering from the carmaker in the Indian market. Also, it is the best-selling product in its segment for the month of September this year. If sales figures are to be considered, Maruti sold a total of 19,433 units of the Baleno in the Indian market in September this year. This figure is higher than the total of the sales figures clocked by the competition. To put things into perspective, Hyundai Elite i20 managed a sales tally of 9,852 units, while the Tata Altroz registered a sale of 5,952 units. VW Polo and Honda Jazz, on the other hand, could only see a sales tally of 1,585 units and 748 units, respectively.

If we calculate the sum of sales figures of all the competitors of Baleno, it comes up as 18,137, which is nowhere close to the 19,433 units of the Baleno. Talking of the YoY growth, Baleno registered a positive YoY gain of 70 per cent with 11,420 units sold in September last year. Hyundai Elite i20, however, saw a drop of 3 per cent on a YoY basis.

While Honda Jazz clocked a 15 per cent increase on a YoY basis, the VW Polo registered a downfall of 4 per cent. The Altroz, however, fails to be a part of this tally because it was launched in January this year. Overall, Maruti sold 1,47,912 cars in September this year, whereas, in the same month last year, the sales figures were at 1,10,454 units only. This showcases a YoY growth of over 34 per cent.

Helping the Baleno score big numbers on the sales curve is its affordable starting price of 5.63 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Also, it comes with a powerful yet frugal 1.2L 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol motor. It is offered in two states of tunes – 83 PS and 90 PS. However, the peak torque in both the iteration remains identical at 113 Nm. The gearbox options on the Baleno include a 5-speed MT and a CVT. The Baleno returns an ARAI-claimed mileage of 23.87 kmpl with the manual gearbox and 19.56 with the CVT in place.
