Maruti Ertiga to Ford EcoSport - Here's a Video on Cars of Indian Police Forces

For decades after India’s independence, our police force was still using the original style jeep for most of the states. Though it may have been more than enough to chase fugitives in the ’50s, as the decades progressed it became harder and harder. The police have one of the toughest job descriptions, as they have to protect the people and their jurisdictions from any harm. Thankfully, all states in India have updated their official vehicles. Even though some have been discontinued since procurement, they still serve ably across the country. Mahindra Bolero/ Scorpio

Unmatched reliability and ability to carry seven passengers with ease and comfort make the Toyota Innova and its one of the most popular MPV’s in India, for the public as well as the police. The older Qualis has been discontinued since 2005, but gamely continues in multiple police forces across the country.

Hyundai’s first sedan in the Indian Market, the Accent used to be a consistent best seller in the market. The police like it too as well, its light and airy cabin plus a huge boot make it a useful asset.

Maruti Ertiga/Gypsy

Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Assam

Maruti’s Ertiga is the second most popular MPV in India after the Innova. Though smaller, it can still seven people, and Maruti’s peerless service network makes it a no-brainer for police forces. The Maruti Gyspy, on the other hand, is beloved by the Indian Army and police forces due to its simple mechanicals and bulletproof reliability even after all these years.

Chevrolet Tavera/Enjoy

Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala

General Motors ceased operations in India for some time now, but Indian police forces still use the Chevrolet Tavera and its successor the Enjoy for its spacious interiors and good reliability.

Tata Sumo

Delhi, Kerala, Telangana, Goa, Assam, West Bengal

Indian’s first bonafide affordable SUV, the Tata Sumo is a legend in the Indian auto industry. Its easy maintenance and ability to seat 7-8 passengers made it a go-to choice for most state police forces.

Tata Safari Storme

The Tata Safari Storme was just discontinued after 22 years on sale and is a beloved icon in the Indian market. It has just been recently inducted into the Indian Army and is the police vehicle for Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand as well.

Tata Indigo

West Bengal, UP

Tata launched the first sub 4-metre sedan with the Indigo CS, changing the Indian ever market ever since. The car offered a generously spacious cabin within its small footprint which is appreciated by the police officers driving it.

This may come as a surprise in this list, but the Ecosport with its powerful engine and good ride/handling makes it a great highway patrol vehicle. This is why two states have inducted them in their fleet.

Kerala, Gujarat

A police interceptor taken to the extreme, the RZR 800 is an off-roading beast when you need to follow the bad guys at a fast pace and roads cease to exist. It is currently used as a beach patrol vehicle.
