New Hyundai i20 Diesel Mileage Tested in REAL WORLD Conditions - VIDEO

Firecrackers have been banned for this Diwali, So, Hyundai India made a different sort of bang by launching the third-generation i20 in India just a few days back. Following an all-new design language, different choices of engines, and packed to the gills with features, The new Hyundai i20 has come in all guns blazing to go straight to the top of the premium hatchback pile again. 

At IndianAuto, we got into a third-generation Hyundai i20 diesel, which comes with a 4-pot 1.5 litre turbo unit and produces 100Ps and 240Nm of peak power and torque figures, respectively. Hyundai says the new i20s diesel unit is the most fuel-efficient 1.5-litre diesel car in India, claiming an ARAI-rated frugality of 25.2 kmpl. However, to see how much of that is realistic, we did a short test drive that can be seen in the video we have above. 

We have Mohit Bharadwaj in the new Hyundai i20 diesel to start things off, getting economy figures of 12kmpl in the MID as he commenced the drive in the urban environment. The fuel economy next increased to 17 kmpl, with the car stretching its legs on the highway, as there are less stop-start conditions to ruin the numbers. Once we headed to the twisties, Mohit drove the i20 with more eagerness, its updated stiffer suspension bolstering his confidence to push the car hard into every corner. In the twisties, the mileage dropped to 14.2 kmpl, which when factoring in the number of corners, the elevation changes, and the number of gear changes to keep the engine on the boil, is quite remarkable.

Next, Yatharh Chauhan took over the driving duties, and he mainly focuses on the mileage figures in city conditions, the new Hyundai i20’s natural habitat. Starting from the outskirts and as the vehicle enters the city, the mileage expectedly dips as now one gets stuck in stop-start traffic conditions, having to make constant gear changes to not get bogged down. By the end of the drive, we got an average fuel economy of 20.2 kmpl. Do note that this is not a complete tank to tank test of the new Hyundai i20, but a preliminary test with the figures based on what is displayed on the MID. Also, we were not doing a max fuel economy run to match the ARAI figures, we were driving the car in varying conditions with different drivers to see how close can one get to the quoted figures in the day-to-day life. 

Prices for the third-generation diesel Hyundai i20 start from Rs 8.19 lakh (for the base-level Magna trim) and go up till Rs 10.75 lakh (for the Asta top trim). It may be noted that all prices are ex-showroom figures.
