Here’s a recent video which shows an 0-100 kmph acceleration test between the New Hyundai i20 and arch rival Tata Altroz diesel

Hyundai Motor India Ltd recently launched the new-gen i20 in the Indian market. It directly rivals with the likes of Tata Altroz, which is the indigenous brand's first-ever premium hatchback in the Indian market. It was launched in the Indian market early this year. The Altroz was the first and only car to offer a diesel engine in its segment after the BS-6 emission norms came into effect, the race has now been joined by the Hyundai i20 as well. Both of these cars come with 1.5L oil burners. Therefore, we thought of putting them against each other to see which one is faster off the line to the 100 kmph mark.

Talking about the mechanical specs of these premium hatchbacks, the new-gen Hyundai i20 is powered by a 1.5-litre diesel engine, which develops 100 PS of power and 240 Nm of peak torque. The engine comes paired with a 6-speed MT. On the other hand, Tata Altroz is propelled by a 1.5-litre turbocharged Revotorq engine that produces power and torque outputs of 90 PS and 200 Nm. Transmission duties are done by a 5-speed MT. In total, three different rounds were conducted to get the best timings of both cars. The Hyundai i20 diesel won the first round as it was able to reach the 100 kmph mark in just 11.32 seconds and Tata Altroz did the same job in 12.73 seconds. The timings were almost the same in the second round as the 2020 Hyundai i20 clocked 0-100 kmph mark in 11.93 seconds and the Tata hatchback was able to do that in 12.52 seconds. In the last attempt, the i20 took 11.59 seconds while the Altroz accelerated from 0 to 100 kmph in 12.59 seconds. One can see that the difference between the acceleration timings of both the hatchbacks is around 1 second.

The new-gen Hyundai i20 clearly wins the test, and the main reason behind this is that the Korean hatchback is slightly more powerful than the Tata Altroz. The diesel trim of Hyundai i20 is offered at a starting price of Rs 8.19 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), while the base diesel variant of Tata Altroz is offered at a price tag of Rs 6.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
