The third-generation Hyundai i20 is probably the best premium hatchback you can buy in India today. In good consumer advice, we test which is faster, the i20 turbo or the N/A petrol.

Hyundai Motor India Limited launched the third-generation i20 during the Diwali period last year. In under 4 months of launch, it has over 35,000 bookings with 10,000 units delivered in the same period. It is slightly bigger than its predecessor, giving it more spacious interiors which coupled with its multiple powertrain options and loaded-to-the-brim trim levels make it one of the best premium hatchbacks on sale currently. The only chink in its armour is that it now costs considerably more than the older i20, but considering the amount of features it gets, is justified. Today we have got this acceleration test between two variants of the new i20, the N/A petrol and the turbo.

As you can see in the video above, it is a 0-100 kmph acceleration test between the two Hyundai i20 models. Both these vehicles were tested in the same controlled conditions so there will be only minute discrepancies if any and were given three runs each to get the best possible times. For the first run, the i20 turbo does 0-100 kmph in 11.15 seconds compared to the N/A petrol’s 13.83 seconds. Second time around, the turbo reached 100 kmph in 11.12 seconds, the N/A petrol taking 13.47 seconds for the same. Both vehicles post their fastest 0-100 kmph times with the turbo taking 11 seconds flat while the N/A petrol takes 13.32 seconds. Over the three runs, the i20 turbo was on average 2 seconds faster than the N/A version. This is expected as even though it’s a smaller engine, the i20 turbo makes considerably more power compared to the naturally-aspirated petrol.

Prices for the new Hyundai i20 range between Rs 6.80 lakh – Rs 11.18 lakh, ex-showroom.  You can buy your new i20 with one of three powertrain options, starting with the 86 PS/115 Nm 1.2 litre N/A petrol which can be matched with a 5-speed manual or CVT. The 1.0-litre turbo-petrol comes next for the enthusiasts, pumping out 120 PS and 172 Nm of max power and torque and is mated with a 6-speed iMT or the 7-speed DCT. There’s a 1.5 litre oil-burner as well that makes 99Ps and 240Nm of power and torque figures respectively. It only comes with a 6-speed manual and it is the most fuel-efficient diesel powertrain in the country with figures of 25.6 kmpl, as claimed by Hyundai.
