New Mahindra Thar Diesel Gets ECU Remapped, Makes More Power & Torque Than Turbo-petrol

When Mahindra finally launched the all-new Thar midway through last year, it quickly became the talk of the town, offline and online. The 2020 Mahindra Thar was finally launched a decade after the first one arrived, which quickly became a beloved icon amidst the off-roading community. The new Thar intends to be just as capable off-road as the old one, but also add modern features and much better on-road performance. The new one has over 30,000 bookings, and delivery periods stretch till May 2021. Mahindra since the start of the year has increased production by 50%, but deliveries will take a while. New Mahindra Thar Gets Aftermarket ECU Tune, Puts Out More Power & Torque

The picture has been uploaded by GT Tunerz on Instagram, and the post says that they’re the first in the world to come up with performance upgrades for the new Mahindra Thar. There are no visual modifications to this Thar, which suggests that it came for tuning straight after leaving the showroom. As for the performance mod, the Thar mechanicals remain the same, it’s the ECU that gets an upgrade. The software mapping has been changed to give this diesel Thar max power and torque figures of 160 PS and 360 Nm respectively. This is a bump of 30 PS and 40 Nm from the factory figures. Currently, the ECU remap is only available for the diesel Thar, GT Tunerz is working on a remap for the petrol Thar as well, stating that it’ll be available for purchase soon.

The all-new Mahindra Thar now comes with 2 engine options, a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel, and a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol. The oil-burner makes 130 PS of peak power and 300 Nm of max torque, while the petrol makes 150 PS against 320 Nm. You get two transmission options for both the powertrains, a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic with a low-range gearbox. The Thar also get a transfer case and a mechanically-locking rear differential for some serious off-roading as standard fitment across the range. Prices for the Mahindra Thar range in between Rs 9.80 lakh – Rs 13.75 lakh, ex-showroom.
