The next-generation Mahindra Scorpio will be larger than the current model and though it will retain the SUV’s tall-boy design with upright pillars, it will come with an all-new design. The spy shots give us a clearer look at the new vertically slatted grille and the production-spec headlamps which comes with a twin-pod setup that looks very similar to the upcoming XUV500. The new Scorpio will also come with a new front bumper which comes with air intakes flanking the new fog lamp housings. Over the rear, the next-generation Scorpio will carry over the side-hinged rear door design with new LED taillights and a rood-mounted stop lamp.

A big revelation from these spy shots is the new disc brakes at the rear wheels, the first time in a Mahindra Scorpio, which makes sense since the new model will be larger and probably heavier. The test mule was also spotted wearing 17-inch alloys with a new multi-spoke design, which were wearing wider 245 section tyres. The next-generation Scorpio will be underpinned by an all-new platform, which will be an updated version of the ladder-frame chassis the 2020 Thar sits on.

The Mahindra Thar’s powertrain options will also be shared by the next-generation Scorpio. There will be 2 engine options on offer, a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel, and a 2-litre turbo-petrol. The oil-burner makes 130 PS/320 Nm of peak figures while the petrol makes 150 PS/320 Nm of max figures. Transmission options for both the powertrains are a  6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic with a low range box. Mahindra had discontinued the 4x4 version from the Scorpio’s lineup when the range was updated to BS-VI norms, but the next-generation model may offer an all-wheel-drive model.

The interiors of the upcoming Mahindra Scorpio will get an extensive redesign, and it is expected that the automaker will markedly improve the fit and finish of the cabin with materials of better quality. Previous spy shots have revealed that the dashboard will sport an all-new design with a portrait-orientation touchscreen infotainment system. Much of the switchgear and controls like the steering wheel, gear knob, control stalks, and even the instrument cluster could be shared with the 2020 Thar. Upon launch, it will compete with the likes of the Kia Seltos and the Hyundai Creta in the sub Rs 20 lakh SUV segment, but it will be different to them as it is based on a ladder-frame chassis and can seat seven people.
