The new Tata Safari has finally arrived, and today, we have this video of the new Safari coming up against a Mahindra XUV 500 in a classic drag race.

Tata Motors finally revealed the all-new Safari a few weeks back to much fanfare, and it will go on sale by the last week of February. Its predecessor remained in sale for over two decades and was arguably the first vehicle in the Indian market to be lifestyle-oriented. The Mahindra XUV 500 on the other hand was the first vehicle from the automaker to be based on a monocoque chassis and be front-wheel-drive. It has been on sale for a decade now and is due for a change soon. Today we came across this video that pits the new Tata Safari against the Mahindra XUV 500 in a drag race.

The video has been uploaded by Arun Panwar on YouTube,  which starts off by comparing the looks of the new Tata Safari and the Mahindra XUV 500. The Safari looks much more modern, especially on the interior which is not surprising as the XUV 500 has been on sale for a long time now. Both the vehicles get ready for the drag race and there will be a total of four runs.

The first run starts and both vehicles get a good launch, but the Safari starts pulling away from the XUV 500 to win it. For the second run the drivers change vehicles, and this time it is the XUV 500 who gets a better start to lead the Safari to the finish line. For the third run, the drivers change vehicles again and the XUV 500 gets a better start, but the driver misses a gearshift which lets the Safari get ahead and win. The fourth and final run sets off, and this one is a comfortable win for the Safari.

The new Tata Safari is powered by the FCA-sourced 2-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine that produces 170 PS/350 Nm of peak power and torque figures. It can be paired with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. The Mahindra XUV 500 is powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine that produces max power and torque figures of 153 PS/360 Nm respectively. Similarly to the Safari, it can be paired to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic as well.

The Mahindra XUV 500 is due for a replacement though, with an all-new generation launching in the second quarter of this year. It will come with the latest features and upgraded engines and will be interesting to see how it fares against the new Tata Safari. Upon launch, both the Tata Safari and the Mahindra XUV 500 will compete against the likes of the MG Hector Plus and Jeep Compass.
