RTO Kerala Denies Registration to This BS6 Mercedes-Benz SUV

Today we have a weird case, where a person from Kothamanglam, Kerala bought a brand new Mercedes-Benz GLE from his hard-earned money, and afterward, the RTO Kerala in India refused to register it, accusing the SUV to be a BS4 car even when all the legal documents related to the premium SUV clearly state that it's a BS6 vehicle. We can understand the level of frustration the owner of the car has towards the RTO office. As you may know that the new BS6 emission norms came into action earlier this month and now, manufacturers are producing only BS6 vehicles. Moreover, only 10% of the leftover BS4 stock will be allowed to be sold post the citizens don't face a lockout anymore.

The Supreme Court of India said that no BS4-compliant vehicle will be retailed after 31st March 2020. However, due to the ongoing unfavourable situation, the country is under lockdown for more than a month now. Hence, the court extended the registration date of BS4-compliant vehicles in India till 30th April 2020.

The owner of this premium SUV is among the first few customers of the new Mercedes-Benz GLE in the country. He has been driving his SUV with a temporary registration plate since everyone was ordered to remain inside their home. The owner has requested the Kothamangalam RTO to register his car before 1st May 2020, or else he won't be able to legally drive his GLE with the expired temporary registration.

Form 20 issued by the carmaker tells that the GLE is BS4 as well as BS6-compliant

As per the Form 20 issued by Mercedes-Benz India, the GLE in question here is both BS4 and BS6-complaint, but the RTO Kerala in India is not accepting it. Not just Kerala, a few more cases related to the same issue have been reported from different parts of the country. That’s why carmakers are now providing an extra declaration form on emission compatibility. The premium SUV was launched in the Indian market in January this year. It is available with two diesel and a gasoline powertrain options. All these engine options are BS6-complaint. The SUV is retailed in two different trim levels, namely- 300d and 400d Hip Hop Edition, and is priced between Rs 73.7 lakh to Rs 1.25 Cr (ex-showroom, Delhi).
