Tata has just launched the new Altroz iTurbo to take on the likes of the new Hyundai i20 Turbo and the Volkswagen Polo TSI. The Altroz has been also priced aggressively to attract more buyers looking for a premium hatchback. But the new model also has an unexpected rival in the form of the Nissan Magnite Turbo compact SUV. The Nissan Magnite is the cheapest compact SUV in the market by some margin, and the Altroz iTurbo will face some competition as SUVs are currently the highest-selling category in the Indian auto market. The Tata Altroz iTurbo will only come in the top variants of the premium hatchback, which means it is loaded with features like a 7-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system by Harman with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a semi-digital instrument cluster, 90-degree opening doors, projector headlamps with LED DRLs, ambient lighting, cruise control, rear AC vents, different drive modes, idle stop-start, rain-sensing wipers, wearable key, electrically adjustable and foldable wing mirrors and more. The Nissan Magnite turbo also comes filled to the brim with features like an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a 6-speaker system from JBL, driving modes, a 7-inch fully digital instrument cluster, auto climate control, cruise control, connected car tech, push-button start/stop, functional roof rails with 50 kg load capacity, puddle lamps, ambient lighting, rear armrest with cupholder and mobile holder, wireless charging, rear AC vents, air purifier etc.

Both the vehicles are also evenly matched when it comes to safety features coming with both getting dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking aids (camera for the Altroz iTurbo, sensors for the Magnite turbo). The Altroz also gets corner stability control, high-speed alert, front seat belt reminder while the Magnite gets a 360-degree camera system, traction control, Vehicle Dynamic Control, hill start assist, and a tyre pressure monitoring system. The Altroz additionally has received the full 5-stars in the Global NCAP crash-test safety ratings, whereas the Magnite managed 4-stars overall in the ASEAN NCAP crash-test safety ratings.

Dimensions

The Tata Altroz iTurbo measures 3990 mm in length, 1755 mm in width, stands 1523 mm tall and has a 2501 mm long wheelbase. Compared to this, the Nissan Magnite turbo comes in at 3994 mm length, a width of 1758 mm, a height of 1572 mm and a 2500 mm long wheelbase. Both the vehicles are comparatively similar when it comes to size with the main difference being the Magnite being much taller as it an SUV.

Powertrains

Powering the new Tata Altroz iTurbo is the same 1.2-litre 3-pot turbo-petrol that is under the Nexon turbo as well. It comes in a slightly detuned spec in the Altroz with peak power and torque figures of 110 PS/140 Nm with only a 5-speed manual gearbox available currently. The Nissan Magnite turbo also has a 3-cylinder unit but its slightly smaller, being a 1-litre unit. The turbo-petrol churns out 100 PS/160 Nm of max power and torque which can be paired with a 5-speed manual or a CVT automatic transmission.

Prices for the Tata Altroz iTurbo models range between Rs 7.73 lakh for the mid-range XT trim and Rs 8.85 lakh for the range-topping XZ Plus. Turbo variants of the Nissan Magnite start at a lower price of Rs 6.99 lakh, though the top turbo variant is more expensive than the Altroz at Rs 9.59 lakh. Do note all prices are ex-showroom.
