It has been a while since Tata Motors is said to be working on a Hyundai Creta and a Kia Seltos rival that has been internally codenamed Tata Blackbird; the latest rendering here serves as a pretty interesting take on the upcoming C-SUV

It has almost always been known that the Tata’s new car onslaught won’t come to an end with the introduction of the Gravitas and the production-spec HBX later this year. The carmaker has been working on a slew of new models to plug all the gaps in its product portfolio. An important part of its future plans is an all-new model that promises to take the likes of the Kia Seltos head on. Internally dubbed ‘Tata Blackbird’, the upcoming C-SUV is likely to be in its nascent stages of development. However, this hasn’t kept the creative geniuses to visualize the upcoming model through digital renderings. Case in the point here is all the multimedia you see on this page.

The rendered model you see here seems to be based on the world-class IMPACT 2.0 design theme. In line with this, the artist has picked up a fair share of several styling cues from the latest Tata models. For instance, the fog lamps seem to come from the Nexon, while the even the grille seems to be a highly modified version of the unit found on the B-SUV. A closer look, however, reveals that the base car used for this rather attractive concept is the Subaru Viziv Concept. The similarities become a bit apparent the moment you have a careful look at the silhouette of the vehicle.

Slated to be slotted tightly between the Nexon and the Harrier, the rumoured Tata Blackbird will share the Chery Tiggo’s 5x platform. A distinct aesthetic package, however, should ensure that any similarities between the upcoming model and the Chinese donor stay concealed from the naked eye. The overall length of the vehicle should be somewhere below the 4.3-metre mark, which will give it pretty much the same footprint as the Kia Seltos and the Hyundai Creta.

While it’s a tad too early to expect any sort of official word, chances are that the upcoming model would share the 1.2-litre and 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol and diesel motors with the Nexon. Rumours abound that the SUV could even benefit from a mild-hybrid technology to aid fuel efficiency, while don’t be too surprised to find a dual-clutch auto transmission option on the petrol variant.

In a related development, the home-grown carmaker had earlier announced the approval of plans to subsidize its passenger car division. Chery will likely hold the position of a strategic investor in the new subsidiary and could even act as a technology partner. It may be noted here that Jaguar Land Rover and Chery have formed a JV in China. While talks with the Chinese carmaker are in early stages at the moment, it’s already known that the ‘strategic investor’ will help Tata go frugal on development costs.
