Tesla Model X Awarded 5-star Rating From Euro NCAP

Tesla revealed on Wednesday that its Model X has been rated 5-stars by the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) in the crash tests which are standards for Europe. The all-electric SUV was complimented for having a genuine autonomous emergency braking system that helps avoid or mitigate collisions in most cases. The electric car giant said that the Model X scores exactly the same overall points as the Tesla Model 3 in the same tests.

As for the adult occupant protection, the Model X SUV was awarded a total of 37.5 out of 38 points – posting a 98 per cent safety for the occupant. Particularly, the SUV gets maximum scores in the frontal offset deformable barrier as well as the lateral impact, while the frontal full-width and whiplash rear-impact are rated at 7.8/8 points and 1.7/2 points, respectively. The car’s autonomous emergency brake was awarded full points too.

In terms of child safety too, the Tesla Model X achieved a praiseworthy result. It received a rating of 81 per cent, by offering good protection to the child dummy (equivalent to a 10-year-old kid) during the collisions, although poor neck protection has reduced the score a little. The 6-year-old dummy was better protected all throughout but the testing agency noted that there’s lack of space to fit a universal child restraint in the third row of seats when the middle row is in normal position.

Vulnerable road users safety was rated at a lower 72 per cent. While the Model X has active pedestrian safety and impact-reducing bonnet which offers good protection for pedestrians’ legs, the safety of the pelvis area of pedestrians was quite poor. Safety equipment was praised with an overall rating of 94 per cent or 12.3/13 points, while the autonomous systems were approved with maximum scores.

Powering the Model X are two electric motors installed on each axle. The base model gets 259 BHP of power on both front and rear motors while the performance version gets 259 BHP at the front axle and 503 BHP at the rear.
