This Hindustan Contessa Classic has been restored to its former glory and we just can't stop drooling over it

With iconic models such as the Contessa and the Ambassador on sale, Hindustan Motors has created history in the Indian auto market. Particularly, produced from 1984 to 2002, the Contessa was based on the Vauxhall VX series and has been a symbol of luxury. The HM sedan had only two competitors: the Premier 118 NE and the Standard 2000.

This Restored Hindustan Contessa Classic Is Really Memory-Evoking

The HM Contessa Classic used to be an iconic vehicle in the Indian auto market.

After the success of the Ambassador which lasts for decades, HM made a decision to produce a brand-new model which can establish a premium status among the Indian motoring enthusiasts. The Contessa, which was manufactured along with the Amby at Uttarpara plant, was expected to be another successful vehicle from HM. Nevertheless, it lacked the fire power under the bonnet and received the power from only the 1.5-litre BMC motor which can generate 50 HP.

While the sedan was warmly welcome by many Indian auto enthusiasts, its motor did discourage many customers from purchasing one. To deal with the issue, HM collaborated with Isuzu Motors from Japan to manufacture the 1.8-litre gasoline burner which is mated to a 5-speed gearbox. Accordingly, the idea of ‘Contessa Classic’ was created with a CLASSIC and 1.8GL badging mounted to the rear of the vehicle.

The HM Contessa Classic is a combination of the spacious interior, impressive performance and excellent riding quality. Thanks to the 1,800 cc Isuzu SOHC inline petrol water-cooled engine with fuel-injection technology which can manufacture 88 HP, the Contessa Classic can reach a top speed of 160 kmph, which is 35 kmph over that of the regular Contessa.

To evoke the memories of this iconic vehicle, recently, KRAFT Design has restored one Contessa Classic to its previous glory. The vehicle gets a pleasant dark blue paint scheme and two headlights on the two sides with silver coverings. The car also comes with a large horizontal grille and a silver bumper, which contributes to its masculine appearance. Furthermore, the restored Contessa Classic also has a neat side profile with vintage wheels, wide tyres, tall pillars, a wide trunk lid and silver accents across the pillars and window line. In the rear, the vehicle is equipped with horizontal taillights and sloping rear glass. All of these design elements help provoke memories of an iconic sedan.
